Description: Established in 1994 with the intent of providing solutions to the growing demand of the video graphics industry, 3D Labs began as a semiconductor that specialized in the development and distribution of various hardware devices. It also quickly became one of the leading innovators in the field of visual processing including various DCC (Digital Content Creation) graphic accelerators and CAD (Computer Aided Design) simulation support for visual professionals.

The founding of the company was a result of the management buyout of the Dupon Pixel systems headquartered in the U.K. 3D Labs was involved in the high end graphic chip market and marketed its Oxygen and Wildcat graphic card brands to DCC and CAD support markets. Since its inception, the company slowly built its reputation as a leader in the international IT industry by delivering advanced 3D products for PC based systems.

In 1996, the company went public with C. Hock Leow (President), Jerry Peterson (Executive VP and General Manager), and Tim Lewis (Director for Marketing) at the head of the company’s executive team. Primary research and development services of the company are situated in England. Corporate Offices are maintained by 3D Labs in Hang Zhou (China) and Milpitas, California. Technology partners include Magma Design Automation, Inc., ARM Limited, and Seaweed Design.

3D Labs also ventured into the production of application supporting programmable processors that are normally embedded into handheld devices. The company ensured its success by acquiring other established technologies provided by companies like Dynamic Pictures (1998) and Integraph (2002). The company went on to incorporate these acquired technologies into their manufacturing process to introduce innovative products catering to the graphic cards market of the PC desktop system.

3D Labs officially stopped the improvement of its professional 3D graphics chip product line in 2002 when it was acquired by the Creative Labs. With the merger, the company concentrated its efforts on the mobile device market where it provided continued support for embedded and mobile media processors.

One of the more notable introduction of 3D Labs was the GLINT 300SX which was the first chip ever produced by the company that was equipped with 3D capabilities. This technology is used by its vendor partners for incorporation with their graphics boards. The company also exerted major influence in the development of the OpenGL2.0 technology that is widely implemented in computer system video graphics.

3D Labs is presently a part of the OpenGL Architecture Board which is devoted to the continued advancement of API (Application Program Interface) supporting OpenGL implementation. It gained distinct nomination in the EDN Innovation Award of 2007 for its DMS-02 Media Processor.
