Company: 3ware
Description: Founded in 1997 by Jim MacDonald, J. Peter Hertz, and Mitch Altman, 3Ware Inc., maintained its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The company’s business operation centered on the implementation of disk drives (predominantly inexpensive) for desktop computer systems. This is to support application deployments that are reliant on the SCSI standard.
Essentially, 3Ware was identified with the delivery of storage devices related to RAID controllers, PATA (Parallel ATA), SATA (Serial ATA), and Serial Attached SCSI.
The success of 3Ware made it an attractive acquisition for AMCC (Applied Micro Circuits Corp.). The purchase which amounted to $150 million was completed in April 2006. From that point on, 3Ware functioned as a subsidiary of AMCC representing one of its business units. Barbara Murphy (Senior VP and General Manager) was appointed head of the acquired company.
StorSwitch is one of the products which differentiated the company from its competitors. This technology was based on a proprietary input and output processor developed by 3Ware. Aside from this, the company was also responsible for the designing of switching architectures by taking into account packet switching process to accomplish high performance data transmissions.
The introduction of this technology accomplished the procedure of utilizing the entire bandwidth for the transmission of data from the disk drive which is linked to the RAID controller. This architecture provides the parallel transmission process to various involved components.
As a subsidiary of AMCC, 3Ware introduced the Switched RAID Storage Solutions technology. This product consists of a series of RAID controllers related with SATA and PATA drive controllers. 3Ware’s 9690SA controller is capable of handling a maximum of 128 devices including non-blocking switching framework.
In addition, the product also supports bootable arrays that ensure improved fault tolerance, RAID offload, input and output RISC processor, and genuine delivery of RAID hardware. Its adjustable stripe size boosts application performance along with better handling of SNMP and SMTP procedures. It also incorporates dynamic sector repair to complement it efficient data protection system.
Another impressive product is the Sidecar which provides external RAID solutions for increased storage capacity. This product is normally used in relation with PC, Mac Pro, and Power Mac G5 workstations using a sophisticated framework based on the PCI-Express architecture. Its SATA enclosure allows for the hosting of four storage devices for data, battery backup, disk access capitalization (StreamFusion technology), fault indicator, and RAID hardware protection feature sets.
Simple and automated management via RAID administration software is likewise provided by 3Ware for RAID devices. The company’s controllers are capable of merging high volume data streams along with an inexpensive per byte data storage.
