Description: Essentially operating as a security company, the ASL (Advanced Security Link) Company was founded by Mitchell Phan in 1991. The company maintained its operation base in Costa Mesa, California. Phan maintained the position of Chief Executive Officer until the company was acquired by MDI, Incl. in a deal that was initiated in December of 2005 and finally consummated by 2006.

The business agreement involved $1.94 million in cash including $2 million in MDI stocks as compensation for the company’s customer list, distribution base, manufacturing assets, and intellectual property.

The majority of ASL operation included the delivery of surveillance systems, products, and services that were deployed in institutional, educational, banking, retail, military, and government facilities rather than homeowners. The company’s products and services covered approximately 20,000 sites around the world.

Some of the company’s named customers include the U.S. Customs, the U.S. Postal Service, the Hilton Hotel line, Hallmark, Arizona State University, GTE, UPS, Universal Bank, Exxon, Amtrak, Circle K, and Walgreens.

The company remained in the forefront of securities technology and maintained its position in the industry until its eventual buyout. ADL was the pioneer in the transmission of video signals using conventional telephone lines with very minimal loss in quality.

With this breakthrough the company became an innovator in the area of digital video recording along with remote video surveillance technology. The company continued to assume the role of leader in the development and distribution of high quality video feeds over low bandwidth network segments.

ASL maintained a workforce of 30 employees in its Costa Mesa headquarters and turned over annual revenues of nearly $10 million. The company made some of these revenues from its electrical security equipment business. This technology could be deployed in conjunction with control and network tools and came with built-in energy and safety controls.

RemoteWatch Network Digital Video Recorder (NDVR) was one of the biggest contributions of ASL to the industry. This product represented the very first digital video management system in the securities market which was purely modular in nature. RemoteWatch’s modular architecture was intentionally done to allow its incorporation with basic business programs including feature rich video surveillance systems put in place in enterprises.

Other products that were manufactured and introduced into the market by ASL included VoIP (Voice over IP), Remote Backup, Audio Recording, Video Time & Attendance, MobileWatch, CasinoWatch, RemoteWatch, PointWatch, GuardWatch, and BankWatch among others.

The open architecture platform developed by ASL was combined with the security system developed by MDI, Inc. led to the creation and subsequent marketing of the SAFEnet system under MDI.
