Company Name: Agere

Description: Agere Systems Inc. was created on June 1, 2002 as a result of a spin-off from the Lucent Technologies company. The company is widely known for its development of microchip controllers and Integrated Circuits (IC). The company is headquartered in Pennsylvania, USA at the Lehigh Valley region.

Originally, Agere was the name of an electronics developer company based in Texas which was eventually acquired by Lucent Technologies. The acquired company underwent incorporation on August 1, 2000 and from the time of take over, both companies carried out their operations under the name of Lucent Technologies.

By 2002, there was a move for diversification of operations within Lucent Technologies which resulted in the creation of the subsidiary company which was eventually named Agere Systems. This subsidiary is not to be confused with the Texas based electronics developer with the similarities between the two ending in their being namesakes.

Agere maintained an office in India at Bangalore, Whitefield. This location was primarily the site for the design and development of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) that were implemented in various industry specific devices such as mobile phones, video gaming consoles, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), and various consumer electronic products. This site also produced different software applications that were distributed on various IT markets worldwide.

Aside from its India branch, Agere also had a presence in Raanana City, Israel which served as the base for the operation of Modern-Art. This company was acquired in 2005 by Agere to function as the development arm for advanced processor technologies. In particular, 3G (Third Generation) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) specific technologies were designed and manufactured from this end. Presently, UMTS provides the framework for the 4G technology or what is touted as the next generation technology for mobile and portable devices.

LSI (another electronics company which specialized in design and development) was officially acquired by Agere on December 4, 2006 to augment its ASIC development and production capability. This also allowed the company to venture into the field of host bus adapter, Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), computer networking peripherals, and storage system designs through the technology of the California based LSI.

The stock transaction involved in the acquisition process was valued at $4 billion with the approval of the stakeholders being secured on March 29, 2007. By April 2, 2007, the merger was finally consummated. At present, Agere remains as one of the premier providers of optoelectronic and integrated circuit component solutions in the IT market.

The company claims to have developed the technology of successfully combining circuitries and components for the manufacture of one product that can be deployed and implemented by various telecommunication and computer equipment manufacturers.
