Company Name: Aircell
Description: Beginning in 1991 with an idea from Jimmy Ray, AirCell was driven by its desire to become an industry leader in the field of airborne telecommunications. This technology which catered mostly to business aviation and commercial airlines involved the installation of low cost telephony systems specifically designed for aircrafts. After undertaking various market researches and investigations for other potential sources of technologies, AirCell was finally established.
Headquartered in Louisville, Colorado, the company’s current set of corporate executives included Jack Blumenstein (President and CEO), Joe Cruz (Executive VP and Chief Technology Officer), Margee Elias (Senior VP and General Counsel), Andrew Geist (Senior VP and Business Aviation Solutions), and Ronald T. LeMay (Chairman). With their leadership and guidance, the company which is the pioneer in the airborne cellular communication technology is ensured of its place in the industry.
During the next few years after its debut, the company invested in the further development of its technology while simultaneously completing all the requirements set by governing and regulating bodies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). By the year 2000 the AirCell was prepared for a full blast launch of its commercial operation.
In September of 2002 the company had already achieved worldwide coverage by being an authorized hardware and service provider of Iridium. The production of Satellite transceivers were done in order to cater to the needs of airline passengers that are using mobile and portable devices such as Electronic Flight Bags, fax machines, laptop computers, and PDAs. Prior to the introduction of this technology, these devices were traditionally prohibited from operating while the aircraft is in flight.
Technological pioneering initiatives were achieved by AirCell from 2005 beginning with the flight demonstration program which was tasked with the testing of the proprietary AirCell Broadband System. The testing process allowed the company to establish the following: effectively demonstrate the usage of wireless broadband technology via the establishment of links from that are done directly from air and ground units.
Furthermore, it also marked the first time that an advanced wireless platform for air to ground communication system using broadband capability was deployed. Finally, it showcased the incorporation of varying technologies like VoIP, WiFi, CDMA, and GSM under one communication infrastructure pipeline. The company also gained recognition for its usage of the smallest antenna for facilitating the usage of broadband technology in the fields of EVDO and aviation.
AirCell won in 2006 the bidding for FCC’s spectrum auction for the delivery of air-to-ground broadband frequencies. The company’s license to use the 800MHz frequency for its air-to-ground technology allowed them to deliver an affordable broadband service solution to the business aircraft and airlines industry across the United States.
During the early part of 2008 and upon approval of the FAA, the company launched its very first in-flight Internet service with the commercial brand name Gogo which virtually turns a commercial aircraft into a WiFi hotspot.
