Description: Probably one of the oldest existing corporations in the telecommunications industry, Alcatel was created in 1898 by its founder Pierre Azaria who was a French engineer. Alcatel was originally a part of the La Compagnie Générale d'Electricité which was an industrial firm engaged in the business of providing services and solutions to the transportation, electronics, electricity, and telecommunications industry.

The company skillfully handled its business deals resulting in the increase of its shareholdings via transferring of its satellite subsidiaries, railway signaling business, and critical security systems to Thales which is a vital player in the French defense industry.

Forwarding to 1995, the Chairmanship and Office of the Chief Executive Officer was handed to Serge Tchuruk. His ascension to this position translated into the refocusing of the company’s business group under its telecommunications division.

Originally carrying the name Alshtom, the group was promptly renamed to Alcatel during Tchuruk’s tenure. Through this redirection, Alcatel garnered numerous necessary acquisitions during the late parts of the 1990s like in the case of DSC of North America.

By 2000 the company successfully acquired one of the leaders in the development of ATM technology in the industry, Newbridge. During the same time, Genesys was also taken over for its experience in the contact center industry.

In 2006, Alcatel made a strategic business decision by merging with Lucent Technologies to answer the call of increasing competition in the market. The merger resulted in the strengthening of Alcatel’s market position in the telecommunications technology industry.

Alcatel also got involved in the radio access business of Nortel UMTS. These business arrangements were part of the long term sustainability tactic of the company. Its merger with Lucent spearheaded a drastic technology evolution in the telecommunications market. In the same year the company merged with China TCL to create the TCL and Alcatel Mobile Phones Limited.

The merging of Lucent and Alcatel reflected the focus on the end-to-end product portfolio of solutions providers for global communications. Alcatel’s research and development efforts gained worldwide recognition for providing solutions for connecting national borders via well-balanced and extensive global services in the area of resources and revenues.

Being one of the acknowledged leaders in the telecommunications industry, Alcatel delivers to the market software, hardware, and services solutions to different enterprises and service providers in both the public and industry sectors around the world. The company maintains its operation in over 130 countries with equal sales distribution from the European and North American markets.

The company delivers to the market DSL multiplexers that allows for high speed Internet access using ADSL and VDSL connections. Lucent on the other hand provides the voice switches and various optical products. By 2004 the company established partnership with industry giant Microsoft Corporation to supply IPTV services via its Triple Play Services Delivery Architecture.
