Company Name: ALI

Description: ALI is actually a representation of the initials for the Acer Laboratories Incorporated which is a subsidiary of the Acer Corporation. This subsidiary is primarily responsible for the design and production of various Integrated Circuits (IC) that are used in the assembly process for Personal Computer (PC) systems as well as embedded systems.

Founded by Chin Wu, Ronald Chwang, and SJ Lee, the company was the result of the meeting between the three founders and then Acer Chief Executive Officer Stan Shih to address the requirements of the Acer group in the facets of IC design. This is the reason why ALI remains focused on the production of these vital electronic components.

In 1992 the company achieved the feat of ranking third in the list of computer chipset providers in the world that are associated with DATAQUEST. Various recognitions for its efforts and production standards came in 1994 and 1995 when ALI received awards from the Science-Based Industrial Park of Taiwan. The company was a recipient of the Innovative Product Award and the following year, the company was also cited for its growth in the fields of finance and research and development.

The Genie chipset developed and manufactured by ALI also received the Innovative Product Award. The company placed fourth in the IC Design and Production Capability Awards competition. In December of 1995 the company gained the distinction of being awarded with the Research and Development Award from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

ALI’s entry into the foreign market came in 1996 with its decision to expand its marketing and distribution. As a direct result of this business strategy, the Acer Laboratories Inc., USA was created.

By 1998, the company received the ISO 9001 Certification from the IECQ which was a testament to the level of production expertise attained by the company and the standard of business practice it has in place. ALI purchased 70% of T-Square Technology Inc shares to gain control over the enterprise in May of 2000.

In July of the same year the company opened its Shanghai based subsidiary ALI Corporation. During this time the company also decided to relocate its operating base to the NSA building situated in Taipei, Taiwan. In May 2002 the company officially took on the corporate name of ALI Corporation.

The company’s history from this point was marked with numerous creation of spin-off companies. In October of 2002 the ALinx Technology Corporation came into existence and by 2003 the ULi Electronics Inc. made its entry into the IT market. Both of these subsidiaries are wholly owned by ALI Corporation.

In 2006 NVIDIA expressed interest in ULi and eventually bought the company in 2006 in the amount of $52 million. In December of 2006 ALI implemented the Ocean Blue MHEG-5 application into its manufactured devices. The PC-Cam solution produced by the company received Microsoft accreditation in January 2007 and is currently compliant with the requirements of Vista Premium. ALI’s current products include embedded systems, computer peripherals, video controllers, and computer chipsets.
