Company Name: Alphasmart

Description: Joe Barrus and Ketan Kothari (former engineers at Apple Computer) established in 1992 the Intelligent Peripheral Devices, Inc. The company was established with the mission of creating, developing, and marketing portable personal learning solutions with competitive market prices. The founders intended to delivery the educational tools in a sturdy, rugged, and lightweight structure that is ideal for deployment in classrooms across the country.

Shortly after its establishment, the founders brought in Manish Kothari (brother of Kethan) and soon released its very first product in the market under the commercial name AlphaSmart Keyboard. Neo and Dana joined the company right after the product’s release and signaled the beginning of the company’s expansion of its product portfolio. Management also underwent a makeover and officially began carrying the corporate name AlphaSmart Inc. as part of its efforts to promote and market its keyboard line.

By June of 2005 the company entered into a strategic agreement with Renaissance Learning, Inc. This merger prompted the development of more innovative technologies for the enhancement of the software product line manufactured by Renaissance. Another goal of the merger was the expanding of the market share of AlphaSmart products along with the plans of Renaissance to take full ownership of AlphaSmart and make it its subsidiary company.

The agreement stipulated that every stockholder of AlphaSmart will receive $3.75 per share and has the alternative of being paid in cash or with 45% stock options and no more than 55% in cash. The AlphaSmart provided solution consists of various portable devices that include keyboards, displays, licensed operating systems, and basic proprietary applications.

AlphaSmart 300 served as the foundation for the development of more hardware based platforms released under the AlphaSmart brand. With majority of its consumers coming from the United States, Europe, and Canada, AlphaSmart products can be widely seen in various school districts across these countries.

The AlphaSmart product is described in the computer industry as a low cost and convenient platform which provides students with a storage solution for their different school works that include essays and other writing assignments. Its architecture puts into consideration mini applications and applets which can be downloaded by the user to produce a wide range of specialized programs and tutorials.

The company is currently undergoing collaboration with major software vendors for the development of more learning applets that are applicable for school use of students.

The first commercially available applet for the AlphaSmart is Key’s Word. This applet is a keyboarding lesson which is designed to help students in improving their typing skills. The over 10 years of experience of the company in the production of keyboard sized computer systems allows its development of products that can be hosted on Palm Operating System driven products.
