AMD or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is a company that manufactures semiconductors and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. It was founded in May 1, 1969 by Jerry Sanders, Ed Turney, Sven Simonsen, Jack Gifford, Larry Stenger, Frank Botte, and Jim Giles. Among the company’s key executives are Dr. Hector de Jesus Ruiz, present company chairman, and Dirk Meyer, president and chief operating officer.
AMD is among the leaders in the innovation, manufacture and design of semiconductors. The company’s primary objective is the collaboration with customers and partners in the creation of the next generation of technological solutions for work, home and recreation. AMD’s US$6.013 billion revenue in 2007 and estimated 16,500 employees have significantly made it a global pacesetter in the provision of technical advances.
It was in September of 1979 that Advanced Micro Devices Inc. became public. It was in the same year that it debuted in the New York Stock Exchange or NYSE and opened the manufacturing facility in Austin. It established its first manufacturing plant overseas in Penang, Malaysia where it began volume production.
A number of the company’s notable developments included an agreement signed with International Business Machines or IBM in 1982 as a provider of microprocessors for the PC’s of IBM. Two years later, it had been listed as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America. In 1985, it qualified among the Fortune 500 companies listed in the magazine Fortune 500.
The acquisition of the microprocessor company NexGen had been made by AMD in 1996. The following year, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. introduced the AMD-K6 microprocessor which is based on NexGen’s Nx686. It was two years after, in 1999, that the processor AMD Athlon was introduced to the market. It was to be the seventh generation that was designed for the platform Microsoft Windows.
In 2000, the first 2GHz processor that used the architecture of the AMD Athlon MP was manufactured by the company. AMD Inc. also offered its consumers the AMD HyperTransport technology which is a multiprocessing platform. The said product is a point-to-point link that is intended for servers, embedded systems, telecommunications equipment with a faster communication speed and networking. Other processors manufactured by AMD include the Duron, Athlon XP, Opteron, Athlon, Sempron, Turion 64 Phenom, and Athlon 64.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s acquisition of Array Technologies Incorporated or ATI in 2006 paved the way for the creation of the multi-Graphics Processing Unit called the CrossFire Technology. The said technology allows for the use of a maximum of 4 graphics cards in one computer to maximize graphics performance.
