Company Name: Ampex
DESCRIPTION: In 1944, when audio recording was still at its infancy, Alexander M. Poniatoff founded the Ampex Corporation in San Carlos, California. It was, however later renamed as Ampex Electric and Manufacturing Company. It now maintains its headquarters in Redwood City California.
One of its initial products, the Ampex Model 200 was released in 1948. It was used to record the delayed radio broadcast of The Bing Crosby Show.
After two years, Ampex introduced the first ever sound system made for theaters that was magnetic and manufactured for Todd; otherwise known as; AO CinemaScope. That same year, the company introduced the first audio recorder with a multi-track feature patterned after the data recording technology that also uses multi-tracking.
In March 14, 1956; the Ampex VRX-1000 video recorder is considered the first practical videotape recorder. It was introduced Chicago, Illinois and was later renamed Mark IV.
In 1958, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) employed Ampex magnetic tape and data recorders for all of its space missions.
By 1963, the company had released TM-7, a new computer peripheral digital tape transport. They also introduced its electronic video editing technology called EDITEC. It could control recordings frame by frame, used mostly by broadcast television companies.
Ampex introduced a library system with an Automated Cartridge called the 712 DST in 1997. This particular product was capable of keeping a maximum of 5 and 8 tenths Terabytes which has an estimated speed of forty megabytes per second when transferring data.
Then, in 1998, the Fox Television Network became the first to use the DST system to save its primetime TV program files.
Another one of their products, the Mini – Recorder called Ampex MiniR 700 Mini-Recorder is electrically and physically compatible with the AMux 600 I/O product; however, it is also used for other types of inputting data. The base of this product is compatible with many interfaces like Ethernet, IRIGB and RS232.
Due to its non-volatile, solid and sealed design, the DSRs 400B Solid State Data Recorder is capable of resisting shocks and heavy vibrations. Its stored data can be retrieved by connecting to a PC. It was also designed to be power-efficient. It has a data rate of up to more than 600 megabytes per second. Solid state is up to 2.2 terabytes, and it has an interface control of RS 232/422.
Despite all its developments over the years, Ampex products are now becoming obsolete. This year, 2008, it has filed for reorganization and has plans to come back soon.
