Company Name: Analog Devices
Description: Analog Devices is a U.S.-based company that is involved in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. It specializes in the production and development of DSP, MEMS, ADC and DAC chips. Analog Devices is among the world’s oldest companies that primarily manufacture semiconductors. The company was founded in 1965 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Matthew Lorber and Ray Stata. They initially had 46 people in their employ.
In the signal processing field, the company is a definition of innovation and excellence. Analog Devices’ mixed signal, DSP, digital or analog signal processing integrated circuits play a significant role in the conditioning, developing, converting and processing of real-world phenomena such as light, sound, temperature, motion and pressure into electrical signals that are employed in various electronic equipments.
It was in 1969 that Analog Devices purchased the company Pastoriza Electronics, based in Newton, Massachusetts. This was followed by the acquisition of Analog Devices of Nova Devices in 1971. Nova Devices had been an integrated circuits-manufacturer. It was not until seven years later that the company would buy the North Carolina-based Computer Labs.
In 1990, Analog Devices purchased the company Precision Monolithics Inc. that was based in Sta. Clara California. Five years later, Analog Devices entered into a joint venture with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC. To date, the latest acquisition made by Analog Devices have been those involving Integrant Technologies and Audio Asics in 2006.
The company is presently involved in the design and manufacture of circuits that measure 65 nanometers to 3 micrometers. The products focus on comparators, voltage references, digital to analog converters, embedded processing, analog to digital converters, MEMS, sensors, power management, RF, fiber optic, amplifiers and audio/video.
Presently, Analog Devices is number five among the companies that manufactures semiconductors and has an annual revenue of US$ 2.5 billion. The company is headquartered in Norwood, Massachusetts with its large factories scattered in various locations in the United States.
The company’s main facility is situated in Ireland and also has facilities for testing in the Philippines. Analog Devices was made public in March of 1969. It had also been registered on the New York Stock Exchange in 1979.
In 2006, Analog Devices and Nintendo had struck a deal by joining together to design and create the controller for the new console of Nintendo called Wii. The incorporation of the linear acceleration sensor referred to as the Analog Device ADXL330 3-axis was made by Nintendo in the development and production of its products.
