It had been Robert McCool who had first created the Web server platform Apache. At around that time, he was still affiliated with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications or NCSA HTTP Web server. The evolution of the HTTP became stagnant after he had left the company.
A variety of patches for the Apache Web server had circulated via email. Brian Behlendorf, Rob Harthill, Roy Fielding, David Robinson, Randy Terbush, Nicholas Pioch, Eric Haberg, Raobert Thau, Frank Peters, Cliff Skolnick and Andrew Wilson were the ones responsible for the creation of these patches. Together with Robert McCool, these developers formed what was initially the “Apache Group.”
The HTTP server Apache is a server that played a significant role in the World Wide Web’s original expansion. The Apache was primarily the feasible option available besides the Netscape Communications Corporation server which is presently called the Sun Java System Web Server. Since its inception, the company has evolved into one of the competent Web servers in the industry that is at par in terms of functionality and performance with other Web servers that are Unix-supported.
Since 1996, Apache had been the most recognized HTTP Web server on the Internet and as of June of 2008, it has been serving approximately 49.12% of all the Internet websites. The Apache HTTP Web server is compatible with different Operating Systems including Linux, Novell NetWare, Solaris, Unix, OS/2, TPF, eComStation, Mac OSX, FreeBSD and Microsoft Windows. Apache may be availed as an open-source and free software.
The Apache HTTP Web server functions to provide dynamic Web pages including the Internet’s static content. Individuals are enabled to design and create several Web applications around the server. Apache’s redistribution in various packages of proprietary software includes those of IBM’s Websphere and Oracle’s Database application servers.
The Apache is incorporated by the Mac OSX as an integrated support system and Web server for the WebObjects application server. The operating system is affiliated with Kylix development tools and Borland’s Delphi. Novell NetWare 6.5 also features the Apache HTTP Web server as its default Web server.
The main competitors of Apache are Microsoft IIS or Internet Information Services, Sun Microsystems Sun Java System Web Server and Zeus Web Server. A number of bug websites operate by employing the Apache Web server. The Web server Google is a modification on the system used by Apache. The front-end of the search engine Google is largely based on this modified technology. Several Wikimedia projects operate on Apache Web servers as well.
