Company Name: ARK Logic
Description: ARK Logic Incorporated designs the graphics accelerator integrated circuits commonly found in home and business personal computers. It used to be based in San Jose, California. It was in 1995 that the Integrated Circuit Systems, Inc., or ICST acquired majority of the interest in the company.
In November 1996, a partnership between ARK Logic and S-MOS was formed with the goal of providing mutual advantages that would immediately guarantee systems vendors and board designers cost-effective and advanced 2D/3D graphics solutions. The partnership aims to provide high performance 2D/3D solution capable of addressing PC 3D games and VRML markets that were emerging at that time.
S-MOS Systems, Incorporated is a company that develops, markets and designs cards, graphics ICs, and subsystems for applications involving display and systems. It also offers contract manufacturing and semi-custom services via corporate affiliate in Japan, Seiko Epson. It is a privately held company and was founded in 1983. S-MOS’ PIX provides users with an accelerated 3D performance without having to use additional on-board memory.
Within the year that the partnership was finalized, ARK Logic, Incorporated and S-MOS Systems, Incorporated came to an agreement to integrate ARK Logic’s QUADRO64 2D VGA multimedia and graphics accelerator and S-MOS’ PIX 3D with each other. The combination rendered an engine with a single-board reference design intended for Internet, gaming, and multimedia computer systems. It was created with the goal of giving web surfers, computer gamers, systems vendors, and board designers the opportunity to achieve high quality performance with relatively cheaper cost.
ARK Logic’s QUADRO64 is a single highly integrated chip, a PCI-based 64-bit video and graphics accelerator that has a multimedia expansion bus. It provides users with video acceleration and 2D graphics. To complement the design effort, ARK Logic Incorporated and S-MOS Systems, Incorporated then made a pledge of optimizing software drivers for the said product to provide users with plug-and-play compatibility with popular computer games and other multimedia applications that include VRML browsers. It has incorporated a full featured graphics and full screen video accelerator referred to as RAMDACs, the APEX or ARK Logic Peripheral Expansion bus and programmable clock synthesizers.
The S-MOS’ PIX, on the other hand, is a 3D rendering engine that is PCI-based. It has a capability of 66 million pixels per second and employs a system memory for storing 3D images that have been rendered without needing additional and expensive 3D memory. The S-MOS’ PIX supports such popular features as correct texture mapping perspectives and gourmand shading.
