Company Name: Atherton Technology

Description: Atherton Technology of Sunnyvale, California is the developer of the Software BackPlane’s Computer-aided Software Engineering (CASE) framework. The company was founded in 1986 by Greg Lynott and William Paseman, both from Daisy Systems; a computer-aided logic design vendor. Lynott became the company’s Chief Operating Officer while Paseman was Chief Technology Officer until 1989. Ram Banin, founder of Daisy Systems, later joined the company. Banin became the company’s Chief Executive Officer and President but was later replaced by Art Goldberg.

The company was initially funded by five investors. These were Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Morgan Stanley Venture, Robertson Stephens, Mayfield Fund, and Menlo Ventures. Thomson Ventures, a subsidiary of Thomson-CSF, acquired Atherton Technology in 1991. Thomson-CSF altered its name to Thales in 2000. Thales is presently innovating on information systems for aerospace, defense, and security markets.

Atherton has worked together with Syseca to expand its products in the US, Europe, and Japan. Syseca, a Thomson Software house based in France, is also a software engineering framework product developer.

Atherton’s primary product is the Software BackPlane. This system administers the code elements made by other tools and signified in structure the BackPlane can disregard. It carefully monitors the status of elements. It also provides connection among diagrams, code, data definition, and other elements of the system development process. BackPlane helps to control the administrative flow of the work. It manages the integration cycle in successive iteration as the system segments are constructed as a whole.

Software BackPlane also features the Project Softboard. It is an e-mail system allowing people to communicate freely as it also supports interaction regarding work in progress. There is a distinction between the approach of the BackPlane and the Information Resource Depository System (IRDS). Atherton targets the aerospace and engineering markets while IRDS eyes the MIS/COBOL commercial group. BackPlane administers the development process but not the elements developed. IRDS represents individual elements with minimal action on control. IRDS also puts the system elements into a straightforward DBMS or database management system. BackPlane leaves them where they are controlled by various tools. It can assemble the elements when needed to give the user the appropriate subset.

Atherton depicts itself as the maker of CASE framework for networked workstations. It continuously markets its Software BackPlane with numerous vendors. Some of these tool vendors are Cadre Technologies, Interactive Development Environments, and Interleaf Incorporated Atherton has concentrated on UNIX platforms including Sun Microsystems’ Solaris and IBM’s AIX.
