The company presently has a main office located in St. Louis, Missouri.
The company was established in 1983 and had initially been known as the Southwestern Bell Corporation or SBC. SBC had originally been a part of the Regional Bell Operating Companies which was more popularly known as the Baby Bells. It was in the same year that AT&T Corporation had begun to incorporate SBC. A year later, AT&T had complete control of Southwestern Bell Corporation.
In 1993, SBC moved its main office to San Antonio, Texas where a number of changes took place. It was also in the same year that made an announcement that it was changing its name to SBC Communications, Inc. Then in 1997, the company purchased Southern New England Telephone and Pacific Telesis. It was in the following year that SBC Communications, Inc. went into a merger with Ameritech and moved the company headquarters to its present location. Dow Jones Industrial Average purchased SBC Communications, Inc. in September of 1999.
At present, AT&T is comprised of the eleven Bell Operating Companies and other telecommunications companies that it had acquired over the years. The company’s current chairman and chief executive officer is Randall Stephenson. Among AT&T’s board of directors are James Henderson, Joyce Roche and William Aldinger III.
The company has always been about communication and today, the company is among the leading providers of DSL Internet access and wireless services in the United States. The phone booths of AT&T could be found across the country. The company has expressed its intentions of venturing into the latest in media technology including VideoShare and U-verse which are both forms of communication via high-speed Internet.
AT&T aims at improving its subscribers’ communication lines. In 2008, AT&T was a recipient of the Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering because of its contribution in the development of the coaxial cable technology which makes telephone lines function more efficiently and effectively.
The company has also been active in U.S. politics. In fact, it is the second largest donor in the political campaigns in the United States. Since the 90s, AT&T has consistently been giving approximately US$35 million to both the Republican and Democratic parties.
