The management team of Avid Technology includes Gary G. Greenfield, CEO and president, Kirk Arnold, executive vice president for customer operations, Ken Sexton, chief financial officer, chief administrative officer, and Executive VP, and Dave Lebolt, senior vice president and chief technology officer.
The marketing manager of Apollo Computer, Inc. established Avid in 1987. The digital NLE system prototype Avid/1 was released in 1988 at the NAB or National Association of Broadcasters convention. It had been built around the Apple Macintosh II with an Avid-proprietary software and hardware installed. It was in the early 90s that the Avid products began replacing the widespread editing platforms Steinbeck, Moviola, and KEM.
The company became publicly listed in 1993 and the following year, the company had introduced the OMF or Open-Media Framework as the standard file format that enabled media sharing and sharing of associated metadata. By 1995, a number of editors had begun to transition to the Avid systems thereby heralding the beginning of digital editing.
The Academy Award-winning movie, The English Patient, had been edited using the Avid systems in 1996. It was the first Oscar for Editing that was awarded to a feature film that was digitally edited.
Avid Technology had also released the non-enterprise versions of the company’s professional editing line which was intended for home usage and SoHo or Small-office/Home-office consumers that included the Xpress DV and Xpress Pro.
The products of Avid Technology are presently being employed in the television and movie industries and are used in feature films, commercials and TV shows. The Media Composer is the company’s flagship product. It features a high-definition capability and is reasonably priced for non-professionals. The Media Composer is capable of handling 1080i data from a mid-level camcorder such as the Sony Z1 or Sony FX1.
Avid Technology went on to expand its business which was geared towards managing and storing media files. It was in 2006 that the company launched its new platforms namely the Avid Unity Isis and the Avid Interplay.
The company has been a recipient of a number of awards including two Oscars, three Emmys and one Grammy Award. Other than that, the company has also received the Scientific and Technical Award for concept, engineering and design of the Avid Film Composer or AFC system in 1998 and the Scientific and Technical Award for the Pro Tools digital workstation in 2003.
