Description: Bay Networks in the United States was a provider of hardware for computer networks that resulted to the merger of Wellfleet Communications in Billerica, Massachusetts, and SynOptics Communications in Santa Clara, California, on July 6, 1994. In the United Kingdom, there is another company by the name of Bay Networks Business Technology, which provides consultation services regarding IT-related problems.

SynOptics’ products were known as intelligent network hubs that were based on fast Ethernet while Wellfleet had focused on routers. SynOptics was the leader in intelligent hubs in North America for the regulation of data flow among computers in a network. Wellfleet was next to Cisco in the provision of routers for networks. After the merger, Bay Networks broadened the original product lines of these two companies and plunged into the Asynchronous Transfer Mode market.
