There are many BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) drivers which controls the CMOS (Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor) located on your motherboard. It will be necessary to know the manufacturer of your motherboard, the model, and operating system. Companies such as Dell load their own proprietary BIOS drivers. To find the original chipset for those, you will have to open the computer and find the serial numbers on the CMOS chip.

The motherboard manufacturer’s logo and model number is also located on the motherboard. If you have the original owner’s manual, consult it first before opening the computer. The sales slip or invoice the computer came with usually has the motherboard type and model located on it as well.

Just do a web search for the manufacturer’s website, locate its driver download pages, and download the BIOS updates for your motherboard. Sometimes, only the latest updates for new models are available on the manufacturer’s site. For older motherboards, you’ll have to search elsewhere.

Bios-drivers.com is a great place to start. It has hundreds of motherboard manufacturer’s bios updates, and it lists them by company. Click on the motherboard manufacturer, and then look for the model. You’ll need to download the BIOS update for the operating system you’re using.

Once you have BIOS update you need, double-click the exe file (or unzip it, and then double-click the exe). Follow the install directions, and then reboot. When the computer boots back up, the first screen you see should list the version number of the updated BIOS. It may also be necessary to go into the BIOS boot menu (usually by hitting the Delete key) and change the default settings back to your previous settings. Don’t change anything that you don’t know the specifics about. All you should have to do is change the time and date, and the boot order of your devices (Such as HDD-00, CD, or USB as your 1st boot device, etc.)

Once you have changed what needs to be changed, save and exit the boot menu. The system should reboot, and then load your operating system.
