Cakewalk Company

Cakewalk was founded in 1987 by Greg Hendershott, also now its current CEO. The company was initially named Twelve Tone Systems. Now, it is considered to form part of the leaders dedicated in developing powerful but easy to use applications for digital production and recording of musical pieces. Other key people in top management include Steve Thomas as Director of Public Relations and Noel Borthwick as its CTO.

Midi Sequencer Cakewalk Audio Pro

Cakewalk was established in Boston using its trade name in reference to the MIDI sequencer application it created, Cakewalk Audio Pro. Its initial release in 1987 earned prominence during the years of DOS. However, to allow users to integrate synthesizers in the computer, the application required installation of an MPU-401 card, an interface for MIDI.

UART Computer Mode

Later versions of Cakewalk Audio Pro relied on the UART computer mode, which gave way to the initiative of creating true support for digitized audio. Since then, Cakewalk has catered to the needs of musicians all over the globe, as well as award-winning sound engineers and designers, producers and composers. Cakewalk Partnerships

Cakewalk is also in close partnership with Roland, another giant in the digital music industry. Because of this long partnership, it brought about Roland’s purchase of additional Cakewalk stocks in 2008, from 45% to 60%. It allowed Roland to control shares in Cakewalk concerns.

The alliance brought about new concepts in branding, allowing Cakewalk to be introduced by the identity of Roland products. The collaboration allowed the tag line to be carried by all products of Cakewalk.

Product bundling such as in the case of Sonar LE was also the result of the merger of the two giants in the digital music world. Sonar LE was a product of Roland’s Edirol and Boss in combination with Cakewalk technology. This also resulted in the design, development and release of an innovative digital recording solution called Sonar Power Studio.

Cakewalk Audio Data

Throughout the existence of Cakewalk, it has produced an efficient application that has the capability to produce audio data for integration with broadcasts, film and video games. Its products distinctively held the classification of having high-Cakewalk digital sequencers and workstations for audio. Its functions include the full integration of music solutions for hardware and software. The company also introduced virtual instruments that are now used by digital music producers.

Cakewalk also released notable products such as Home Studio, Guitar Studio, Overture, Metro SE, Audio FX, Fruity Loops, BBE Sonic Maximizer and Alien Connections, among others. Direct competitors of the company are noteworthy developers such as Apple, Pinnacle Systems and Yamaha.
