Kubota is a company engaged in heavy equipment manufacturing while Convex Computers is a known producer of vector computers. Showgraphics is a company that produces high-end graphics while Rambus, Inc. is into high speed interface technology.

In November of 2008, the company was acquired by ATI Technologies.

Chromatic Research was a company that placed the personal computer industry at a new level through the company’s sophisticated and comprehensive multimedia products. The company is a pioneer in media processing by making the all-in-one chip as its reckoning product for the graphics, video, DVD and audio applications in personal computer.

Chromatic Research is often considered as the world’s foremost “chipless” semiconductor company. It was a company engaged in the design and development of media processors that are to be used in set-top boxes, personal computers and other electronic-related consumer products.

One of the most notable products of Chromatic Research is the MPACT!, a multifunction multimedia device that was specifically designed for use in personal computers. The product is a media processor that can be programmed to execute a wide arrange of multimedia functions such as video, audio, 2D and 3D graphics, fax and modem, telephone and also videophone.

What is remarkable about the device is that all of the mentioned multimedia functions can be applied using just a single chip or an add-in card. This capacity of the MPACT! device makes it stand among other hardware solutions that traditionally have fixed functionality. Furthermore, the device requires minimal hardware support with its MPACT processor. A software for the device is also available that could handle higher levels of functionality.

To further improve the company’s MPACT! Product, Chromatic Research entered into an agreement with SRS Lab, Inc. in 1996. The agreement was the integration of a 3D audio enhancement technology called the Sound Retrieval System into the Chromatic’s device.

With the new add-on, the media processor had additional features such as Dolby Surround AC-3, 3D positional audio, innovative audio synthesis, and top-of-the-line video, graphics and communications functionality.

In collaboration with the company’s hardware partners namely Toshiba America, GS-Thomson Microelectronics and LG Semicon and in response to the growing graphics industry, Chromatic Research launched a new generation of multimedia signal processor which it called MPACT!-2.

With the rapid developments in the graphics industry, a number of firms had already joined the 3D graphics accelerator market. Presently, the industry is dominated by 3Dlabs, ATI Technologies, S3, Cirrus Logic and SDfx.
