Description: Compatible Systems Corporation, or referred simply as Compatible, was established more than two decades ago. It was a U.S.-based IT company with their head office initially located in Boulder, Colorado.

Compatible was noted for their operation in the networking industry. The company has been one of the industry leaders in scalable Virtual Private Networking (VPN) hardware-based solutions. Among their stiff competitors are Lucent Technologies, Cisco Systems Incorporated, Shiva Corporation, and Nortel Networks.

Compatible Systems Corporation designed, created, and sold products that are related to Internet access, remote network connection, ISP sites, private wide area networks, tunneling, and simple local Ethernet interconnections. However, they have put their focus on VPN solutions and routers in the later part of their operation.

During their shift in focus when Compatible enjoyed being the leading provider of hardware-based VPN solutions, they primarily created solutions intended for site-to-site and remote client corporate connection networking. Compatible was likewise a leader in the networking industry for more than 10 years before they were bought out by Cisco Systems Incorporated.

Before the acquisition, Compatible Systems Corporation had a very strong customer pool. This was primarily composed of Internet service provider resellers. They were responsible for installing large equipments both for private and public use in the United States and other parts of the world.

The biggest challenge for Compatible came during the popularity of broadband access and high-speed Internet. That is the time when Cisco stepped in and acquired the company, as well as all their products. Cisco controlled the operations of Compatible, marketed their products, and gave individual support to end-users. But after few years of uplifting Compatible’s name and products, things did not get better.

In 2003, Cisco decided to let go of Compatible. They stopped supporting the company’s routers and firewall products. In the same year, Cisco advised all the users of Compatible Systems VPN to instead use Cisco VPN devices. To make the shifting easier, Cisco created a migration program. This program helped the Compatible device users to transfer all their data and configuration to the Cisco VPN devices.

Cisco ceased using all the hardware created by Compatible Systems Corporation after the users have successfully migrated to the new VPN devices. All forms of Cisco’s support for the Compatible products were totally terminated in 2004. This left no track of possibility to use the company’s products as well. This move also signaled the official end of Compatible Systems Corporation.
