Company Name: CompUSA Management Company
Description: Michael Henochowicz and Errol Jacobson launched CompUSA Management Co. in 1984 at Addison, Texas. It was originally launched as Soft Warehouse which functions as a computer accessories and product distributor. In 1985 at Addison, the company opened its first store. Then in 1986 at Atlanta, Georgia, CompUSA opened its first mega-store.
In the year 1988, the Computer Superstore was opened through the supervision of Pat Wyckoff, Elizabeth Greenwood and other managers. Then several other mega-stores were opened in Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Houston and several major cities around United States. CompUSA is operating as a Systemax Inc. subsidiary. Currently, the company’s main office is located in Miami, Florida.
In 1991, the original name Soft Warehouse was changed to CompUSA then afterwards the company was added in New York Stock Exchange. The company was led by Nathan P. Morton at that time. Upon Morton’s leadership the company instantly became a large company. CompUSA was already generating revenue of over $2 billion. Though, in 1993 Morton’s disagreement with the company’s directors led to his resignation.
In the years 1998 to 2005, CompUSA made major business decisions. Such decisions included the purchase of Tandy's subsidiary Computer City and Good Guys. Then under Sanborns, a Mexican retailer group, CompUSA operated as a private company. Also, some of the Good Guys and CompUSA stores were converted to mega-stores.
Unfortunately, in the year 2006 CompUSA was forced to close 15 of its stores because of the tight competition. In the same year, the company also presented the public with its Home Entertainment marketing scheme employed in some of the company’s stores.
The company was known to be a huge retailer of electronics, computers, computer parts and computer accessories. Its products are sold in the company’s 17 stores situated in Illinois, Florida, Puerto Rico and Texas. The company is focused on the technology retail sector. Specifically, this sector specializes in software products, computers, entertainment devices, consumer electronics, non-store retail and appliances.
CompUSA opened more than 200 stores located in the United States which makes 2006 its peak year. The company’s largest competitors are Dell, Best Buy and Circuit City.
The different brands that belong to CompUSA are Master Power, CompuDyne, Norwood Micro and CompUSA PC. The products manufactured by CompUSA contractors are sold in Norwood Micro that basically sells computer accessories.
Systemax Inc. has successfully acquired CompUSA last January of 2008. Systemax is a direct dealer of accessories, computers and other associated products. This is to complement Systemax’s multi-channel retail subordinate which is TigerDirect. The 16 CompUSA stores were likewise acquired by Systemax. It also includes the CompUSA’s trademarks, website and several operations in electronic commerce.
