Company: Creative Labs
Description: Initially involved in the business of offering various computer system repair services the company eventually got into the area of PC assembly. The company began expanding its operation in the field of customizing processes for the understanding of the Chinese languages via the production of voice and melodic files.
The computer system’s audio interface mechanism attained extreme popularity that it prompted the company to initiate further innovations to subsequently produce a standalone sound interface card.
Eventually, Creative Technology Limited which was founded in 1981 in Singapore by its CEO Sim Wong Hoo made its mark in the computer industry. By 1987 the company introduced into the computer markets a sound device that was capable of producing twelve-voices and can be integrated into the IBM PC computer system. This product which carried the name CMS (Creative Music System) was distributed in the international IT industry by the Tandy division of RadioShack.
This CMS chip component developed by the company served as the foundation for the components that would be incorporated into modern computer audio card peripherals. This de facto standard presented to the industry the very first product to integrate an on-board music synthesizer, a MIDI interface, and a game port along with the capability to handle digital audio technology.
This development also led to the development of the Sound Blaster product line which was to become one of the more popular digital audio devices to hit the computer industry. This product also pioneered computer devices that were dedicated to providing audio capability directly to the end user.
The monaural version of the audio device was introduced into the market in 1989. By 1992 the stereo version of this audio card was introduced with the SoundBlaster AWE32 and AWE64 16-bit audio cards. These models also incorporated a Wavetable MIDI function.
By January 1999 Creative Labs had an all-out commitment to supply the OEM market with its own multimedia leading products for the PC system. The agreement was with the Microtronica UK which was a division of the Arrow Electronics that was involved with the systems integration market.
In April 1999 released to the market the NOMAD line of portable digital audio players. The NOMAD brand was utilized by Creative for the successful market introduction of the MuVo and the ZEN portable digital player series. On August 9, 2005, Creative Labs (the American subsidiary of Creative Technology Limited) got it’s the patent for ZEN which it applied for on January 5, 2001.
The patent covered the user interface implementation of the portable audio player and maintained that the interface remain a proprietary property of the Creative inherent in the ZEN portable media player line.
Creative’s product portfolio undertook expansion to incorporate optical media players, gaming sound systems, controller and drive cards, headphones, keyboard devices, optical mice, pocket video and web cameras, and graphics cards. It also introduced in the market the Prodikeys which is a unique computer keyboard with a musical functionality.
On March 2006 Creative Labs had a strategic partnership with the OIART (Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology) in London for the creation of the first audio education program in the market. The collaboration adopted the name Pro Tools which was a software used in an 11-month immersion course by the institute. By 2008 Creative Labs stocks were being traded in the Singapore Stock Exchange.
