Description: Identified as multinational company involved in the production of various memory modules for computer systems, Crucial uses the Micron Technology brand in distributing their products. It also represents the key brand name carried by the Lexar media lines of merchandises. The company remains as one of the leading suppliers of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) modules in the international IT market.

Founded as Micron Technologies in 1978 by Joe Parkinson, Doug Pitman, and Ward Parkinson, the company used Boise, Idaho for the base of its operation. Initial funding for company operation came from the group of Tom Nicholson, Ron Yanke, and Allen Noble. Somewhere along the line billionaire J. R. Simplot (Idaho native) infused additional funding for the company’s continued operation.

Crucial represents a collectively owned subsidiary of the mother company Micron Technology Inc. It is known in the IT industry for its wide ranging product portfolio of memory module lines. The products delivered to the computer market by the company are noted for their high quality and their international recognition having garnered numerous awards and citations from industry stalwarts.

The company has also expanded to the area of USB based flash drives, card readers, Solid State Drives (SSD), and memory cards for various mobile and multimedia products.

Upon the retirement of its founder and CEO Joe Parkinson in 1994, the company appointed Steve Appleton as a replacement. He led the company in terms of maintaining its market status and the possibility of further expansion.

The aggressive operation of the company allowed it to take over the operation of Texas Instruments in the year 1998 and subsequently, sometime in 2001, the company acquired Toshiba. These acquisitions not only served to improve the global presence of the company but also to gain access to the current technology of their rivals and incorporate them into its own technological advances. Presently the company owns the distinction of being the sole DRAM producer in the IT industry to be based in the continental United States.

Major competitors in terms of market share and technological support and advancements include Elpida, Hynix, Samsung, and Qimonda. Crucial is credited for carrying out approximately 36,000 computer system upgrades. These component updates are implemented in over 250,000 systems around the world.

On April 16, 2007 Crucial’s mother company opened its very first manufacturing plant in China at a cost of $250 million with a workforce of 2,000 employees. This facility is primarily responsible for the assembly and testing of various memory module components including CMOS image sensors. This facility also represents one of the biggest foreign investment facilities in mainland China. Micron has been involved in the Chinese market since 2001.
