Description: Cyrix Corporation is focused on manufacturing and marketing microprocessors for computers and chips. These products are compatible with the computer specifications of IBM. In 1988, the company was founded by the founder of the company Jerry Rogers. The company aims at providing the IT industry with microprocessors that are inexpensive. The products of the company are sold to distributors and likewise to OEMs located in Korea, Europe, Taiwan and Japan.

The company is supervised by President with J.W. Swent III and H.B. Cash as Chairman. They are professionals when it comes to providing high performance math co-processors for 386 and 286 computer systems. The company has a long partnership with Texas Instruments and is originally based in Richardson, Texas. Cyrix Corporation immediately acquired the services of Texas’s engineers then it resulted to a small design team that includes 30 employees. But even though the team is small, it is said to be a powerful one.

A union with National Semiconductor was conducted in August 1997. But the merging was only until November 11, 1997 since a legal dispute with Intel was in progress. However, National Semiconductor was able to help Cyrix in marketing and fabrication plant access. It was originally used for the fast manufacturing of RAM and telecommunications devices.

The company’s manufacturing operations were then transferred to the plants of National Semiconductor. This was just in time that the agreement with the manufacturing operations with IBM ended. It did not make a lot of difference because the manufacturing of RAMs and CPUs are almost similar. The company had a better chance at providing better products because they have access to better equipments for production.

Consequently, the focus of the company was transferred to manufacturing high-speed processors such as 6x86 and MII. These products are the immediate competitions of Pentium II from Intel and also its MediaGX single chip that is a budget device. It was assumed that the shift in production was because the MediaGX did not have enough competition in the market. In addition, they also felt the constant pressure on OEMs to provide products that are inexpensive.

In 1989, Cyrix was able to launch its first personal computer which is the x87 that includes FasMath 83D87 and 83S87. In 386, the FasMath was the best suited co-processor that runs at a high-speed. And also offers over 50% performance as compared to the chips of Intel. In 1991, Cyrix’s 83D87 was made available in the market. The 6x86(M1) was the most well-known product of the company that was released in 1995. The company has continued on beating Intel’s processors especially in terms of speed.

In 1996, the MediaGX CPU was launched; it combines sound and video parts in one chip. The CPU ran at a speed of 120 or 133 MHz but has a lower price than its competitors. This also paved the way for major OEMs to use the company’s product.

The MediaGX CPU processor was used in 2100 and 2200 Compaq Presario laptops. Packard Bell and eMachines have also used Cyrix processors in its products.

The most unforgettable part in the Cyrix’s history is its lasting competition with Intel. Because of the competition, budget CPUs were produced which had a very low price that also triggered the creation of Celeron processors. Also, Intel has cut back on its price to be able to compete with Cyrix. However, Cyrix was acquired by Via Technologies who did not maintain using Cyrix as the brand name.
