Description: With an operation base in Round Rock City, Texas, Dell Inc. has made a name for itself in the IT industry as a reliable developer and manufacture of diverse desktop and mobile computer systems.
The new product portfolio of Dell included television and portable digital media players. The company also adapted the name of Dell Incorporated after its successful expansion efforts. This name also reflected the company’s business operation expansion to incorporate more than just computer systems and peripherals.
Originally founded as PC’s Limited in 1984 by Michael Dell, the company began when Dell was still attending college at the University of Texas. The company began operation with a $1,000 capital operating from Dell’s dormitory room.
The company’s founder had the vision of assembling and marketing IBM compatible personal computers which Michael Dell personally built from stock components. Initially, the marketing process involved selling the built-up units directly to the end user.
The market advantage of Dell is his ability to provide customers with computer systems that are based exactly on their specifications and needs. This initial business venture also allowed him to get an accurate trend on the specific needs of computer users during that period.
With the initial success of PC’s Limited, Michael Dell decided to drop out of school and put all his efforts into his flourishing business. Unconfirmed reports aver that his parents granted him additional $300,000 capital to allow him to expand his business.
By 1985, the company released the Turbo PC which was the very first original design of the company. Dell advertised this machine in compute magazines which resulted in the placement of several orders for the product.
During the first year of the company’s operation it grossed approximately $73 million from the sales of Turbo PC machines alone. The company had the edge in providing customized and relatively lower priced machines in the market which virtually erased the fact that it were a novice in the computer industry.
By 1987 and brought about by the company’s success in the IT market, it opened its operation in the United Kingdom. Within the next four years through its aggressive research and development efforts, the company successfully opened 11 new corporate bases across the globe.
Attaining global success in the highly competitive IT industry, the company took on the name Dell Computer Corporation in 1988 in obvious reference to its founder. At the start of 1990, the company adopted a new tactic by tapping the capabilities of retailers and warehouses for the marketing of its computer systems and other related products.
This strategy proved to be less effective than the company expected because majority of its customer base preferred the personal approached employed by the company during its startup years.
The company went back to its old and more lucrative marketing strategy which involved direct to customer distribution. The reverting to its original sales strategy proved not only lucrative but also successful as Dell attained in 1992 the status of being included in Fortune Magazine’s list of top 500 largest companies in the world. This recognition was a testament to the company’s continuous efforts to better its products and services in the IT industry.
The emergence of Internet based technologies during the 1990s made Dell focus some of its resources in this seemingly profitable market. By 1996 the company introduced its own website to begin marketing its products to a new computer market which also marked its entry into the e-commerce industry.
The year 2002 marked Dell’s expansion of its product portfolio by introducing its own multimedia product brands.
As part of the company’s expansion it opened its assembly plant in 2004 in North California and by 2006 had acquired control of the Alienware computer hardware manufacturer.
