Company Name: DYMO
Description: Initially founded as DYMO Industries in 1958 by Rudolf Hurwich, the company was primarily credited with the introduction of the personal label maker and embosser to the consumer market. This product innovation released by DYMO made a very quick impact on the industry and immediately modified the way individuals and businesses organized and identified various objects in their home or office environments.
Upon release of DYMO’s embosser into the product market, it was swiftly associated with the labeling and identification process. Almost simultaneously, the company began slowly strengthening its market foundation and establishing itself as a highly triumphant enterprise in the field of manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of embossers for both business and residential applications.
After 10 years of involvement in the consumer market, the company began its expansion efforts by targeting the European market and opening its first corporate office in the continent. By 1978 due to a business agreement, DYMO assumed the position of a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Esselte Office Products. This company is an internationally recognized entity in the office supplies market and is regarded as the largest manufacturer in this industry across the world.
As a subsidiary of Esselte, DYMO attained the ability to successfully enlarge its distribution unit via its office supplies segment. The merger also allowed the company to broaden its product portfolio. DYMO incorporated electronic label makers into its product line in 1990. These new products were released to the consumer market featuring built-in keyboards with formatting functionality.
The device also incorporated an LCD screen with support for high quality printing output feature. DYMO’s introduction of these supplementary products into the consumer market largely contributed to its growth in both revenues and market share during the 1990s.
The US-based CoStar Corporation was acquired by DYMO’s mother company in 1998. This gave the company access to the small dedicated label printer technology of the pioneering firm. It also gave DYMO a substantial share of the market already established by CoStar during its years of operation. CoStar is responsible for the delivery of the tiny LabelWriter into the market.
This device provides the user with the ability of printing the label directly by using their desktop computer systems. This device successfully addresses the problems associated with using conventional office printers when creating and printing labels.
With its company restructuring in 2000, DYMO modified its organizational structure in such a way that its Chief Executive Officer assumed the position of Company President. The company also took over the responsibility of the sales and marketing operation for the North American region.
DYMO’s corporate office in Belgium became the center of its operation in Europe. This branch handled the sales and marketing along with the product development responsibilities for embossers and electronic label makers. This responsibility also covered the production and development of accessories like electronic and embossing tapes.
By 2005 Newell Rubbermaid successfully acquired DYMO which became a component of the Sanford Brands business unit. The company remains as an international leader in the delivery of simple embossers and PC-connected label printers to the consumer market.
