The first institutes were established under the society in 1954. It presently has 58 institutes that are spread across Germany.
Each of the founded institute is capable of researching and developing technologies on a particular field in applied science. The Fraunhofer Information for Applied Technology or FIT is one of the 58 institutes under the Fraunhofer Society.
There are presently 115 researchers that work at the FIT. These researchers are classified into four divisions namely Process Management, Cooperation Systems, Life Sciences Informatics and Information in Context. The groups are respectively led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Rose, Prof. Dr. Reinhard Oppermann, Prof. Wolfgand Prinz and Prof. Dr. Thomas Berlage.
The researches at FIT are frequently licensed out to companies. The other previous members of the institute have also established their own companies in order to develop their own technologies and discoveries. A number of the companies that have benefited from the researches made by the research and development of FIT include GmbH, OrbiTeam Software GmbH, LOCALITE GmbH, FluT Biosystems GmbH and Enfec GmbH.
The humanIT Software GmbH company is one that is formed to develop the technology generated at FIT. It was in this manner that inFocus was developed. inFocus is employed in the creation and viewing of interactive visualization and also analyze huge databases. This technology was augmented for the creation of the product called the InfoZoom. The humanIT company had later been acquired by proALPHA.AG.
FIT has several other industrial partners in developing products. One such partner is the LOCALITE line which is under the group Life Science Informatics. LOCALITE is an imaging systems line that is employed in navigation. The varieties of the LOCALITE have a number of medical uses. All of which were developed in collaboration with LOCALITE GmbH.
The LOCALITE iMRI Navigator is employed in surgical operations using magnetic resonance imaging or MRI. The LOCALITE TMS Navigator is utilized in TMS or transcranial magnetic stimulation. The LOCALITE Knee Navigator aims at determining the proper positioning of prostheses for knees. Lastly, the LOCALITE SonoNavigator which is an ultrasound equipment.
Other products developed at the FIT include the imergo, now called the RedDot Compliance Manager, is used for the evaluation of websites, the MORGAN framework is employed for prototyping augmented software and virtual reality, the SWAPit is employed in data and text mining, the e-learning platform referred to as ALE or Adaptive Learning Environment, the Synergia for collaborations, the BSCW or Basic Support for Cooperative Work groupware system, and the FIT community toolbar.
