Description: The General Electric Company or GE is presently among the largest U.S.-based technological companies. It is involved in the manufacture of electronic products all over the world. It was established in 1890 in a New Jersey laboratory when Thomas Edison founded the Edison General Electric Company upon inventing the incandescent electric lamp. Two years after its inception, the company merged with the Thomas-Houston Electric Company as arranged by J.P. Morgan.
After the merger, the surviving company was named General Electric Company which was headquartered in Schenectady, New York. Although there had been a tight competition at that time with other companies, GE had managed to keep a strong hold on the market. GE has been a trusted brand in electronic supplies and products not just for the home but also for usage in the corporate setting.
Throughout the years, the company has established a solid reputation. The credibility of the company was built on the lighting industry. With continued research and development, GE had been able to release other products in the market. It launched a comprehensive product line of special purpose computers that included the GE 600 Series, GE 200 Series and GE 400 Series.
The company also released a number of real-time process control computers that included the GE 4010 Series, GE 4060 Series and GE 4020 Series. GE also released the Datanet 30 message switching computers in the market. Among the computers that were developed for the series is the Datanet 600. However, for a number of business reasons, it did not reach the market. It was in 1970 that the computer division of the General Electric Company was sold to Honeywell.
Although this part of the company had been sold, GE had been able to purchase stocks from other companies in 1986. The company continued to develop and improve more products that generated more sales for GE. Moreover, the board of directors of General Electric Company saw the need to provide more electronic products to the public.
In line with the said commitment, the company has a promising list of performing assets. General Electric Company is among the largest corporations that provide not just quality products but employment for a number of people also.
The assets of GE include General Electric Capital, General Electric Technology Infrastructure, General Electric Energy Infrastructure, and NBC Universal. GE has been a recipient of a number of commendations from different award-giving bodies for the company’s contribution to the industry.
