Gemplus International SA was a digital security firm that used to be based in Luxemburg. It had been recognized as a leading developer and producer of digital security solutions that are intended to make digital media such as interactions via the Internet safe, enjoyable and convenient.

Gemplus was purchased by the Texas Pacific Group in 2000.

In 2006, Gemplus was engaged in a merger with Axalto. The surviving corporate entity came to be known as Gemalto. By December 2006, Gemplus released a corporate roster that included Alex J. Mandl, executive chairman, Oliver Piou, chief executive officer, and Jacques Tierny, chief financial officer.

Gemplus Mission: Enhancing Digital Security

The main thrust of Gemplus is the enhancement and protection of digital security and digital interaction. Smart cards and other digital security applications are listed among the Gemalto’s primary products. The said Gemalto products cater primarily to companies involved in telecommunications, IT security, identity management, e-government and financial services.

Gemplus’s rich client-base includes those belonging to the IT industry namely Sun Microsystems and Microsoft. It was also involved in the provision of security solutions to four of the top five oil and petroleum companies and three of the top five pharmaceutical companies.
