Description: Hermann Oberlehner used to be chief executive officer of a computer company that was based in Germany until he decided to establish the S plus S company. The said company used to market the computers of different brands. A number of them were sold using the name Gericom which had been an acronym for German Industry Computer.
In 1998, S plus S entered into an agreement with Intel and this enabled the company to become the first company in Europe to build laptops with the processor Pentium II. Its laptops had also been the first to feature a 15-inch LCD screen. It also later entered an agreement with the Taiwan-based manufacturer, Compal to further enhance the Gericom product line.
When the company went public in 2000, the company had then changed its name to Gericom AG. The company became open for public trading on the same year. It had been listed in the Neuer Market of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by November with only 25 percent of the company released to the public. It offered another five percent the following year.
The key executives of Gericom AG include Stefan Pierer, chairman and Hannes Niederhauser, chief executive officer. Around 70 percent of the company profit is drawn from its sale of the Gericom line of laptop computers.
Gericom assembles computer components from other companies. This is followed by the finishing and adding of premium parts in the company’s factory in Lintz. This allows its customers to design and customize their notebook computers.
Aside from notebooks, Gericom is also involved in the marketing of mobile phones, LCD screens, plasma and LCD televisions, generic computer systems that may be offered using the brand names Network or Highscreen, pocket PCs, printers and PDAs.
The main competitors of Gericom include IBM, Toshiba, Acer, NEC, Dell and Compaq. A number of the laptops of Gericom have been distributed in the United Kingdom using the Aldi brand. The said laptops were equipped with the processor Intel Centrino.
It was some time later when the company decided to expand the Gericom product line in order to include premium computers and affordable machines. The company began the manufacture of Gericom computer monitors in its manufacturing facility in China in 1993.
The following year, the company put a stop to this and continued to assemble computer systems from the other manufacturers. The Gericom brand had been revamped in order to hold a laptop products catalogue.
It was not long before Gericom established a partnership with the Taiwan-based Kapok Computers for the purpose of getting help in the development of laptops. Kapok was engaged in laptop development and supply of basic systems to other computers. The components have been utilized in adding functionality to the brand of Gericom.
