Description: Dr. Herman Hauser and Professor Andy Hopper established GlobeSpanVirata in 1993 using the name Advanced Telecommunication Modules Ltd. or ATML. The company later renamed itself in 1998 as Virata Limited with Dr. Hauser serving as Virata Limited’s Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1993 to 2001.

It was from 1993 to 1997 that Advanced Telecommunications Modules Ltd. was engaged in the development and production of several Asynchronous Transfer Mode or ATM products that are under the brand name of Virata. The licensed software application, ATML, has been embedded in the switches of ATM, routers and network interface cards.

In the year 1997, the development business of the company was sold to Escalate Networks and then went on to devote itself to licensing mainly because it intended to access the network providers’ DSL technology and cable modems.

The product line of Virata includes two Application Specific Standard Product Series, the ATOM and the Proton, both of which feature ARM processors. Several telecommunications optimized processors have been added to the company’s product line including the Hydrogen and Helium products which have been most successful.

It was in 2001 that GlobeSpan purchased Virata Limited for an estimated US$1 billion. The surviving company was named GlobeSpanVirata. Then in 2004, the company went into a merger with Conexant for the purpose of widening GLobeSpanVirata’s consumer base.

The company Conexant is involved in the production of multimedia encoders and decoders, home network processors, wireless networking solutions and products, and ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line modems.  The merger involved a stock deal which was worth around US$969.5 million.

The goal of the said merger is to build a business that has the capability of infiltrating the lucrative market of consumer products powered by broadband in users’ homes. Conexant and GlobeSpanVirata envisioned a digital home wherein a network pipes links devices like personal computers, gaming consoles and printers and broadband Internet access by means of both wireless and wired technologies.

Among the key executives of GlobeSpanVirata are Armando Geday, chief executive officer, and Matt Rhodes, president. The combined organization of GlobeSpanVirata and Conexant is valued to be around US$2.8 billion.

GlobeSpanVirata is still engaged in the manufacture and development of integrated circuits, software and systems for the application systems of digital subscriber lines. The main office of the company is presently located in Red Bank, New Jersey.
