Company Name: Hercules
Description: Hercules Computer Technology, Inc., one of the biggest manufactures of graphic cards during the 80s, was established by Van Suwankul at Fremont California in 1982.
The company’s Hercules Graphic Card is its most popular product. The product was a graphics controller that laid down the standard for the display technology. It was most often used on computer compatibles by IBM.
At the time the company was established, almost all of the monitors used were monochromatic meaning it use either page white, amber or green for the display of text and images. For this reason the company’s card was specifically designed for the monochromatic display adaptor (MDA). The use of the company’s graphic cards was common from 1982 to 1990.
After the advent of colored monitors, Hercules Computer Technology also began creating graphic cards that could also work with color graphics adaptor (CGA). Attempts by the company to design a successful graphics card for the enhanced graphics adaptor (EGA) did not however materialize. The company was able to produce the Hercules Incolor Card for the EGA, but, this however did not gain the acceptance and approval of the end users.
In 1998, Hercules Computer Technology, Inc. was acquired by ELSA Technology for US$8.5 million along with the outstanding loans and accountabilities of the acquired company. When ELSA suffered a financial breakdown and consequently filed for bankruptcy, the brand name Hercules was purchased by Guillermot Corporation for a small price of US$1.5 million.
As part of the Guillermot Corporation, Hercules continued its operations in the development of new products. The same name was used by the company for its own graphic systems. New cards that initially introduced used the nVIDIA parts but were subsequently changed to parts distributed by ATI Technologies.
When the year 2004 came, Guillermot Corporation made an announcement that it would no longer manufacture and distribute Hercules graphic cards but instead would use the brand name for the audio and video software and other services that would be later produced by the company.
At present, the combined Hercules and Guillermot companies produces products for wireless technology, audio and computer imaging. Its most recently released products are the DJ consoles and DJ mixers. The devices have deck controllers as well as patented software for playing, creating and even combining audio files. The devices are also equipped with selected sound files. Soon the company released two models of the DJ console, namely, RMX and Mk2.
Another product of the company that had gained popularity is the Game Theater XP (GTXP) a product released in 2001 but was delisted from the company’s website starting 2006.
