Company Name: Hewlett-Packard
Description: Hewlett-Packard, Inc., the world’s largest information technology firm, was jointly established by Bill Hewlett and David Packard on January 1, 1939. The two founders were graduates of Stanford University’s Electrical Engineering Department. Hewlett-Packard, Inc. is principally based in Palo Alto, California, United States. Its operations are known worldwide with an office or branch almost on every country.
Hewlett-Packard’s main business is the manufacture of computers and computer-related accessories. It has a very expansive portfolio offered to its customers that include personal computers, notebooks, PDAs, media storage devices, servers, printers and network products.
The company’s establishment can be partly attributed to the founders’ mentor, Frederick Terman, who in his own ways inspired the two students to establish the company Hewlett-Packard. The two founders established the company with an initial investment of US$538. On August 8, 1947, the company was formally incorporated.
During the early part of its establishment, the company had no clear business direction. The company even delved on a wide range of agricultural products during its early years. From 1940 to 1990, the company’s product line was primarily focused on electronic-testing and measurement devices. HP’s products during these five decades consisted of signal generators, thermometers, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, wave analyzers and voltmeters.
In the 1960s, the company ventured into a partnership agreement with two Japan-based companies, Sony and Yokogawa Electric. In 1999, HP purchased Yokogawa Electric’s share in the partnership deal.
In 1966, Hewlett-Packard joined the computer market when it introduced its HP 2100 and HP 1000 microcomputers. These products were said to have similarities with Intel x86’s architectural structure. The two products soon became the forefront of the HP 250 and HP 9800.
In 1968, the company introduced the Hewlett-Packard 9100A, a personal computer but was marketed by HP as a desktop calculator to remove any association it has with IBM. For this reason, some claim that it was HP who was the first company to produce a personal computer. The product has several features such as CRT display, magnetic card for data storage in the form of a card and also a printer.
During the 1970s, HP surpassed IBM’s sales volume when it introduced its highly developed servers. This surge was further pushed forward when the company presented the screen-labeled function keys that can be found in ATM machines.
The company further expanded its product line in early 80s when it began producing inkjet and laser printers. Its empire further grew when HP acquires Apollo Computer and Convex Computer in 1989 and 1995, respectively.
Before the end of the 20th century, HP’s non-computer operations were transferred to Agilent, now an US$800 billion industry. At the turn of the century, another HP subsidiary known as hpshopping.com was formed which on 2005 underwent a change into HP Home & Home Office Store in 2005.
