The company was established initially on an 800 sq ft. trailer just behind the Orange County High School. With the unwavering support of some individuals including Kent Higginbotham, the company’s work area expanded to almost 6,000 sq. ft. with the vision of doubling the volume of computers produced to 300 units.
The company was primarily established to provide technical training to interested students on real-life and actual working environments. The company also had in its vision to help Orange as well as the neighboring communities to delve into the field of technology. It hopes to foster not only technical skills for students but also build and develop their entrepreneurial skills.
At the company’s inception, it was producing computers for the Orange County Public School. The business expanded to a business incubator project as well as the creation of more employment opportunities for the rural folks of Virginia.
To date, Hornet Technologies has in its list of customers several county agencies such as the Orange County Government offices. The company also builds computers for a lot of individuals in the community as well as neighboring areas. Its product line also includes various computer-related services such as computer hardware configuration, repair as well as maintenance services. It also offers a wide array of technical support services as well as computer-related trainings for the members of the county.
Although Hornets Technologies may be a school program, it has the necessary license to do business in the State of Virginia and is even an active participant in the consumer electronics industry. Every computer built by Hornet Technologies is sent to the school system, Hornet’s primary client as well as the proprietor of the business. With such undertaking, the school system is able to add in its savings around $200 to $300 for every computer produced.
The high level of competitiveness of the project resulted in a higher demand for student skills to gain employment in Hornet Technologies. Some of the students had to work on part time basis in computer operations and PC support for the Von Holtzbrinck Publishing Services, the seventh-largest publisher in the country. The company had also established a name for itself among its partners in the industry. These partners of Hornet Technologies are Herndon Chevrolet, Advanced Network Systems, Madison County Public Schools and Central Virginia Regional Technology Council.
Computers that are produced by Hornet Technologies can be custom-built depending on the customers’ preferences. Prices for the units usually will depend on the specifications required by its customers.
