Company Name: Hotline
Description: HCL or Hotline Communications Limited was established in Toronto, Canada in 1997 by Adam Hinkley. The Australian programmer conceptualized the company a year earlier and it carried the name Hotwire, based on the application Hinkley created for Mac OS based machines.
When the company was founded, it employed personnel in Australia and the United States. HCL operates mainly in the publication and distribution of highly adaptable communication products for client and server architectures.
When Hotline or Hotline Connect was introduced to the computer industry it first targeted a wide audience for product deployment. Many Public High Schools and organizations like Avid Technology and Apple Technology Australia implemented Hotline in their systems.
In the peak of its operations, Hotline received millions of dollars in funding to serve millions of consumers all over the world. The company also received various recognitions and citations in computer magazines, newspapers and a variety of trade shows worldwide.
The application was developed based on the AW or AppWarrioir source code that was first written by Hinkley. Hotline was first promoted by Hinkley along with the program’s six fans.
Their efforts to market the product brought the team to Canada and Australia and later on to the United States. In Canada, Jason Rokas persuaded Hinkley to establish his operations in Toronto where he eventually built the company.
Hotline eventually was regarded by underground societies as the worthy heir to the throne left by the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) application. A large part of the company’s assets was acquired by Hotsprings, Inc., in 2002. Hotsprings was a company that was founded by former employees and some shareholders of Hotline.
When the purchase was complete, Hot Springs stopped the development of the Hotline Connect Software Suite and released in December 2003 its last version to the public.
The Hotline network does not operate anymore in mainstream channels but still continues to operate in other online communities despite being abandoned by its developers.
Hotline received many awards such as the Golden Mouse Award in MacWorld Sweden. It received an accolade in the L.A. Times that referred to it as the Internets best-kept secret. In 1997 during the MacWorld Expo held in Boston, Hotline also received the recognition, Best of the Show.
Some interesting facts of the Hotline Connect application is that it does not rely in using fixed IP addresses. It mainly used time trackers by machines which used fixed IPs and kept track of the IPs that are used by online servers.
