There are different levels of Internet service available from different Internet service providers but, even if you are paying for high-speed, broadband connectivity, you might not be enjoying optimal service if your web browser and operating system arent configured to allow the best service.
The first thing you can do is use an online Internet connection speed test. There are several free utilities available; use your web browser and search for online connection speed test. The exact speed will vary with each test, but the results should not vary widely. Once you know how fast your connection is currently, you can make adjustments and evaluate the improvements.
To adjust settings on your computer:
1. Begin by clicking the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
2. Next, choose Internet Options
3. This will open the Internet Properties window, select the Connections tab, then LAN Settings
4. On this window, click to remove any checked boxes
5. Click OK, then OK again to close the window
Using Internet Explorer, you can check your settings and increase the speed as much as possible.
1. Click the Start button, then Run
2. In the Search bar, type in regedit and press Enter
3. Choose HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. Find the listing Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Internet Settings and click the + to expand the information
5. Find MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and MaxConnectionsPerServer. You can increase the maximum number of connections per page by increasing the values shown in decimals to a higher number
6. Close and re-open Internet Explorer to allow the changes to take effect
Using Firefox, you can increase your Internet speed with these steps:
1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar, then press Enter
2. In the filter bar, type network
3. Click twice on network.http.pipelining and make sure its set to TRUE
4. Click twice on piplining.maxrequests and increase the value
5. Close and reopen Firefox
In addition to tweaking your Internet settings, keeping your computer clean of unused programs and applications. Using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility you can get rid of unwanted temporary Internet files, old downloads, clear your recycle bin, and remove components you no longer want. To open the Disk Cleanup tool:
1. Click the Start button, then choose All Programs
2. Click Accessories, then System Tools
3. Choose Disk Cleanup
To remove files:
Click to select the files you want to remove and click OK
Choose Yes, then OK again
To remove Windows Components:
Click More Options
Choose the Windows Components tab, then Clean up
The Clean up Wizard will launch, click the boxes to select the components to remove
Click Next, then Finish
Click OK, then Yes, then OK again
These tips will help to increase the speed of your Internet connection. It is also a good idea to minimize the number of program you have running on your computer at any time, to increase the power and CPU devoted to the processes you are actively using.
