The HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP, is perhaps the most recognizable Internet Protocols to the general computing public. This is because the HyperText Transfer Protocol appears in front of a website’s domain name as in “http://www.domainname.com.” While the “http://” prefix is certainly common and well-recognized, it isn’t just a random set of letters used with Web browsers. In fact, it is an actual Internet standard used for “distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems.” HyperText Transfer Protocol has been in use since 1990 and formally standardized in 1997 in RFC 2068 which was later made obsolete by an updated standard, RFC 2616 a couple of years later. RFC 2616 contains 176 pages of text describing HTTP and its conventions. Though extremely complex, HyperText Transfer Protocol is essentially a request/response mechanism that sends requests from a Web client to a server and then returns the response. These communications most often take place using the TCP/IP protocol though other protocols can be used. HyperText Transfer Protocol provides a framework for how Web browsers display and use files. When a user enters a URL beginning with HTTP, the user is requesting a Web page which will then be displayed once the “request” to the server has been “responded” to by the server.
