Company Name: ICL
Description: International Computers Ltd. or simply ICL is one of the largest British companies in the IT industry who is involved particularly in the field of computer hardware, software and services. ICL was founded in 1968 and stopped operations in 2002.
It was later renamed as Fujitsu Services Limited after its parent company. The company was formed as a result of the implementation of the Industrial Expansion Act in 1968 under the Wilson Labour Government. Tony Benn, who was Minister of Technology, saw the initiative of forming a British company that will compete directly with IBM and other major computer manufacturers all over the world.
ICL was the result of one of the final mergers that started during the late 1950’s. ICL was composed mainly of two companies English Electric Computers (EEC) and ICT (International Computers and Tabulators). Before joining ICT, EEC had actually just come from a major merger with EELM (English Electric Leo Marconi) computers.
Prior to joining EEC, ICT has notable achievements such as the production in 1962 of the ICT 13000 computer series. The product line was the very first to integrate core memory for transistor machines.
Ferrantis computer division was also purchased in 1964 as a result of another merger instigated by the government. The main reason behind these mergers is to be able to bring together all the best companies in the PC industry under one corporation.
After its creation, ICL immediately took control of ICT's computer series called the 1900 mainframe. It also took over EEC’s System Four machines, which are clones of IBM mainframes that used the RCA Spectra 70 processor.
The most known product line that received success was its line of ICL 2900 mainframe computers which were provided to many government agencies. Primarily, the company’s transactions were from large contracts that came from the UK government.
In the years that came, ICL made several attempts to venture into other products since a large part of company revenues came from their mainframe computer customer base. This effort in diversification lead the company to market several IBM computer clones that were made by Fujitsu.
These mini computer systems were successful in forming a new market to introduce PoS or Point of Sales equipment that included applications for back office functions.
