Company Name: Infocus

Description: Infocus Systems, Inc., a company engaged in the business of designing and producing multimedia projection products, was established by Steven Hix and Paul Gulick in 1986. The company was initially regarded as a designer of information display systems.

A year after its inception, the company began its first product shipment of monochrome display panel that is compatible with CGA. The product uses a newly introduced technology that allows the transfer of information from the computer into the overhead projector screen. The product is popularly used for business presentations and reports.

In 1988, the company earned US$ 8.5 million, a testament of the company’s success in the industry. For the following year, Infocus achieved a major success when it launched the first colored LCD projection panel. The year 1989 also marked the time when Infocus expanded its product line by introducing the harmonized projection unit that has the feature of an integrated light source, similar to slide projectors. The device has the capability of displaying images that have previously recorded from a PC.

Infocus has for its target a large market. Its LCD equipment comes in various types that could meet the financial capacities of customers. The company has sophisticated but highly priced LCDs and at the same offers low-cost LCDs. Its products can have various applications such as education, business or entertainment. The company also offers an expansive range of accessories for the company’s own products.

In the year 1990, In Focus Systems FSC, Inc. was created for the purpose of helping companies particularly the Fortune 500 in their respective presentation services.

However, the company experienced a problem when the United States Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission conducted an investigation on Japan-based manufacturers on the suspicion that these companies were unloading flat panel displays without authority. The incident was not ill-timed for Infocus since Japanese companies manufacture LCD cells for the company.

The company’s situation was further placed to a disadvantage when competitors emerged such as the nView Company. The Company is a producer of Thin Film Transistor (TFT). Another competitor, Sharp, also released a low-cost active matrix that carried a price of only US$ 5,900.

Despite the stiff competition the company was placed under, Infocus remained steadily calm and was even responsible for releasing a brand new cost efficient 16-color computer Viewer primarily used for educational purposes.

Another product called LightPro LS was unveiled by Infocus. The LightPro LS is a portable device that can place to rest three-gun CRT projectors at a price little over the cost. This recently concluded summer allowed Infocus to launch a new set of sophisticated digital projectors which products are to presented at the Infocomm2008.
