Company Name: Intermec
Description: Intermec was established in 1996 initially under the name of Interface Mechanisms. It was in 1982 that the company adopted the name Intermec.
In 1991, Intermec was acquired by Litton Industries and three years later, company ownership was handed to Western Atlas Inc. an offshoot company of the Litton Industries. In 1997, the company division of Western Atlas Inc. established UNOVA Corporation and by January 1, 2006, UNIVA Inc. was officially changed to Intermec Incorporation.
The company’s ticker symbol used in the New York Stock Exchange was also modified as a consequence of the change in corporate name. From the previous UNA symbol, it became IN. The changes were not however limited to the company’s name and ticker symbol but also involved changes in the company’s philosophy, business and core values.
The company’s executive team is composed of Mr. Patrick J. Byrne as President and Chief Executive and Mr. Lanny Michael as the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the company.
Originally, the company’s manufacturing systems and technology was focused on the automotive and aerospace industries. Presently, the company is now principally engaged and considered a global leader in mobile computing as well as automated data collection technology.
The company has partnership arrangements with some of the leading IT companies such as IBM, Oracle, Cisco, SAP and Microsoft.
Intermec is engaged in various activities that include mobile computing, rugged computing, printer and media systems, consulting and wireless networking. Its area of expertise is however in the field of automated information and data capture (AIDC). The AIDC product line includes bar coding and radio frequency identification (RFID).
The company is most remembered for its invention of the bar code symbology. This system allows companies all over the world to keep track of goods and services that are delivered through their supply chain. With the bar code symbology, productivity and efficiency of business operations are greatly enhanced.
Through the years, Intermec was responsible for some of the significant innovations and breakthroughs in its industry. The company was responsible for introducing innovative products in the market such as the Smart Battery technology, a technology now integrated in various portable electronic devices including notebooks, handheld computers and camcorders.
Intermec was also responsible for introducing the first computerized cash register equipment. The device uses the wireless personal Area Network from which the Bluetooth was derived.
In the year 2006, the company produced its first scan engine called the EX25 scan engine, a device capable of reading 1D and 2D bar codes at a distance of 6 inches to 50 feet.
