Company Name: Interwave
Description: Interwave Communications International, Ltd., simply known as Interwave, was established in 1994 and was based in Mountain View, California. Among its top executives were William Gibson, Erwin Leichtle, Cal Hoagland, William Carlin, and Padraig Stapleton.
The company lasted only about a decade and it stopped operating after its acquisition on December 9, 2004. It was acquired for about $40 million by Alvarion, Ltd., a company for global wireless broadband solutions based in Israel. Also, the CEO of Interwave, Erwin Leichtle joined the new management team of Alvarion and now acts as the leader of the company’s mobile unit.
The addition of Interwave into the operations of Alvarion was foreseen to give complementary communications solutions to various mobile and fixed operators in the world. With Interwave, Alvarion is expected to enhance its mobile broadband products and services.
The expertise of Interwave was seen to likely add to the already successful venture of Alvarion. So far, Alvarion has more than 3 million distributed units in more or less 150 countries worldwide. This achievement made Alvarion as the world’s top provider of WiMAX and other wireless broadband network solutions.
During its time, Interwave only remained as a small player in the telecommunications industry. It was a provider of different compact wireless communication systems that were using GSM, which is an international standard used for data and voice communications.
The company was primarily focused on designing low-cost systems for community networks, specialized networks, network extension, and enterprise or private networks. The usual clients of Interwave were wireless service providers and system integrators.
Some of the company’s competitors were LM Ericson Telephone Company, Nokia Corporation, Lucent Technologies, Inc., QAULCOMM, Garmin, Ltd., Motorola, Inc., L 3 Communication Holdings, Inc., Comverse Technology, UTStarcom, Harris Corporation, and Symbol Technologies, Inc.
Throughout its existence, Interwave is known to provide wireless coverage and connectivity to areas that are usually hard to reach. Aside from compact GSM, it also created CDMA systems. They provided infrastructure devices and solutions needed to support a whole wireless network in one compact enclosure.
Although the company has already ceased its operations, Interwave Communications International, Ltd. is still living along the offered products and services of Alvarion. Interwave with Alvarion can have better delivery of products to personal mobile broadband, toll quality telephony, public safety communications, hotspot coverage extension, community interconnection, mobile-based station feeding, and corporate virtual private network.
