Company Name: Jenoptik
Description: The road to Jenoptik AG’s beginning was very long, and somehow, winding. The company is known today as a specialist in photonics and systems engineering. However, its origin was actually from a mechanical workshop.
Carl Zeiss, the founder of Jenoptik AG, began his mechanical workshop in 1894 at Jena, Germany. He started to produce microscopes but it was time-consuming and costly. So he convinced Ernst Abbe, a physician, to work with him.
The partnership resulted to better production of microscopes. By early 1900s, Jenoptik was producing not only microscopes but other products like optical measuring instruments, telescopes, binoculars, and camera lenses as well.
The company almost ceased its operations during World War II, but a new Carl-Zeiss firm was created in Heidenheim in 1951. However, there was also another Carl-Zeiss firm in Germany and the two companies with similar names fought for brand rights until 1980.
It was only in 1991 when Jenoptik GmbH became a legal successor of the Carl-Zeiss Jenna. In 1996, this company was renamed Jenoptik AG. It also went public in that same year and after two years, joined the Frankfurt stock exchange.
Today, the company owns many subsidiaries including Jenoptik Bioinstruments GmbH, Jenoptik Mikrotechnik GmbH, Jenoptik MedProjekt GmbH, Jenoptik Systemhaus GmbH, Jenoptik Camera Europe GmbH, and Jenoptik Ltd. With these subsidiaries, Jenoptik is presently represented in over 70 countries like Hungary, Israel, United States, South East Asia, and Western Europe.
Jenoptik’s competitors in the photonics and systems engineering industry alone include the ATS Automation Tooling Systems, Inc., PRI Automation, Inc., and Daw Technologies, Inc.
What makes Jenoptik different is its various products and services. These are grouped into optical systems, industrial metrology, lasers and material processing, and defense and civil systems.
Some products that the company offers for defense and civil systems are electrical power generator, electrical stabilization system, optoelectronic sensors both for space applications and earth observations, composites, and aircraft equipment.
For traffic solutions, Jenoptik offers modular systems for traffic monitoring, cameras, laser-based sensors, radar-based sensors, classificators, and systems for processing and evaluation.
Meanwhile, Dr. Michael Mertin acts as the recent chairman of the company. He is now responsible for the operational businesses of Jenoptik and handling auditing, marketing, communications, data protections, human resources, and Internet technologies. On the other hand, Frank Einhellinger acts as the company’s CFO. He manages Jepnotik AG’s financial matters.
