Company Name: Konica
Description: In 1873, Konica was created by Rokasoburo Sugiura. The company is a sole proprietor firm. After five years the company was given to Sugiura’s brother Rokudaime. His brother has a broader knowledge in the photography that is why the transfer was made.
The company solely produces cameras and accessories. The name of the company originated from Konica I camera that was the first camera launched in 1987. Since then the company became the leading manufacturer of cameras in Japan.
Unfortunately, the company closed its shop in 2003 but after a short time it merged with a Japanese camera manufacturer, Minolta. Then the two companies were known as Konica Minolta.
Then after three years the merged companies closed. The disjointed stocks of the company were then distributed to Dai Nippon, Seapac and Sony companies. Konica Minolta’s single lens reflex (SLR) production was acquired by Sony. Seapac and Dai Nippon also purchased the company’s chemical factories and paper.
The equipment for photo-processing was also created by Konica. Several of the company’s products are photo accessories, laser printers, fax machines and photocopying machines.
Also, the company was known to be one of the top manufacturers of 35 mm film and its paper was distributed using Sakura as its brand name. Starting in the mid-80s, Konica’s camera production launched its SR series. Centuria was the company’s most recent product in film camera that was launched in 1999.
When it comes to marketability and sales, Konica was said to exceed Fuji and Kodak film. This was because Konica’s products are more affordable but still offers quality products. Its clients were composed of middle-class and student photographers. The company also established international outlets in Southeast, South Asia and East regions.
The F-mount SLR camera was considered to be the company’s most unique product. The camera is equipped with 40.5 mm focal distance (FFD) which is considered to be the tiniest FFD utilized in 30 mm SLR. Then Auto Reflex SLR was developed, still having the same FFD as F-mount, though it has a 47 mm diameter.
The Hexanon is a standard SLR interchangeable lens utilized by Konica. It is said to posses a near-perfect resolving power and acutance unlike other lenses that are used by its competitors.
