Company Name: KORG
Description: Korg is a company founded in the year 1962 by Tadashi Osanai and Tsutomu Kato. The company’s headquarters are located in Japan. Korg was formerly known as Keio Electronics Laboratories.
The name Keio is derived from the Keio Train in Tokyo, near where the first office was based. The combination of Tadashi Osanai and Tsutomu Kato's last names was another inspiration for the name. Before starting the company, Tadashi Osanai was actually a well-renowned accordionist. Meanwhile, Tsutomu Kato had been the owner of a nightclub in Japan before he partnered up to create the company.
The Keio company produced and then released its first ever product in the year 1963. It was an electrical and mechanical rhythm machine (or Disc Rotary Electric Auto Rhythm Machine) that they dubbed the Donca-Matic DA-20.
Following the instant and critically acclaimed success of their product, an updated and higher quality version of the machine was released in the year 1966. It was called the Donca-Matic DE-20. This product also enjoyed mass appeal.
Korg’s most successful product by far is the Korg Poly Six, a music synthesizer. Not only did it receive massive popularity, but it proved that the company could produce quality products and at a consistent basis. It was a very defining moment for the company’s history and timeline.
The Yamaha Corporation has been considered one of the company’s most eventful business collaboration. Not only did Yamaha Corporation provide the company with mechanical parts and circuitry accessories essential in producing their synthesizers, but it was also beneficial to the company’s creations of other electronic music equipment.
During the M1 Music Workstation release in the market in the year 1987, a takeover period happened between Yamaha and Korg. Tsutomu Kato commanded the acquisition terms. By this time, Yamaha and Korg broke their ties to compete against one another for the electronic music market superiority.
After five successful years, in the year 1993 Kato was able to buy back his shares from Yamaha. Kato used the money he had earned during the profitable span of time.
Korg continues to operate and is based mainly in Japan at present.
