Company Name: Kyocera
Description: In the year 1959, an individual named Kazuo Inamori established the Kyoto Ceramic Co., Limited. After a few years, the company was renamed as Kyocera Corporation. In 1983, the company tried to purchase the Yashica Camera Company Limited. However, the acquisition was taking up a lot of time and was decidedly discontinued in 2005.
Kyocera started distributing audio devices in the 1980s. The products they released included CD players, receivers, cassette decks and turntables. Two years later, they also released the Kyotronic 85 computer in 1985. Its main feature is a portable LCD screen that comes with the computer.
In January 2000, Kyocera officially entered the photocopier business. Their entrance to the industry started when they successfully acquired Mita Industrial. Not long after, they also acquired QUALCOMM with the aim of expanding their product line to include mobile phones. This acquisition started the Kyocera Wireless Corporation.
The Kyocera Wireless India, one of its subsidiaries, was established in Bangalore in 2003. This particular subsidiary is one of the companies that is known to have a large share in the market for CDMA (code division multiple access) services in India.
Kyocera Corporation, completed a merger with Sanyo Electronic Co., Ltd. in January 21, 2008. This move allowed Kyocera to acquire Sanyo’s line of mobile phone products. Although the merger happened early in the year, it was not officially announced until April of the same year.
Along with all the company’s developments and acquisitions over the years, Kyocera has maintained its line of ceramic products; an example of which is their ceramic knives.
The corporation is currently headed by its Principal Executive Officer, Makoto Kawamura. Under the leadership, the company continues to create printing-related devices, imaging and ceramic products. They also continue to bring various customer services to their patrons all over the world.
The company consists of seven segments. Each handles a relatively different product. The seven divisions are Semiconductor Parts, Electronic Devices, Information Equipment, Fine Ceramic Parts, Applied Ceramic Products, Telecommunications Equipment and one division that handles mostly telecommunications engineering and the design of software systems for clients. Its latest employee count came up to approximately 67,224 people from all over the world.
