Description: The present-day LaCie started out as two different companies that focused on providing computer storage – Electronique d2 a French company based in Paris which was established by Pierre Fournier and Philippine Spruch in 1989; and LaCie an American company based in Portland, Oregan instituted by Joel Kamerman with his parents Rober and Trudy, and Roger Bates.
Both companies focused on IT storage solutions that fit the standards of interface connecting external devices to computers that were set by the SCSI. In 1995, Electronique d2 acquired LaCie which opened up the French company to the North American market. In 1998, the company decided to replace the name “Electronique d2” with “LaCie” as the worldwide brand name of the group. LaCie headquarters is located in Paris with production facilities in both Paris and Oregon. These production facilities ensure a steady supply of products to their customers worldwide.
Top executives of the new LaCie company include Chairman and CEO, Philippe Spruch; Deputy CEO, Pierre van der Elst; and Chief Financial Officer,Geraldine Hottier-Fayon.
LaCie specializes in the design and manufacture of computer peripherals for Windows, Apple and Linux users. They manufacture 5 families of products: hard disks; storage and safeguarding systems; optical readers/writers; color monitors and calibrators; and connection accessories and consumables.
The company has consistently been recognized as one of the leaders in the industry due to innovations such as the first USB/FireWire board, USB bus-powered hard drive, SCSI drive, FireWire 800 hard drive, SATA external drive, and Terabyte hard disk. They have also developed a safety feature for their hard drives that protects them from data loss on a worn-out hard disk.
The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris acquired LaCie along with its products as part of its collection including Neil Poulton’s “le Coq”, “d2”, “LBD”, “FireWire Speakers”, “Pocketdrive”, and “Rugged”; two Porsche Design drives and; Ora-Ito’s “Brick” and “USB Hub”.
LaCie also works with several designers to enhance the aesthetic value of their products. They have received several design awards including two Design Observer Stars from the Agency for the Promotion of Industrial Creation; two iF Product Design Awards from International Forum Design, and four Good Design Awards from the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization.
