Company Name: LaserMaster
Description: In 1985, Melvin Masters founded LaserMaster with Robert Wenzel who is now serving as its president. It is a Minnetonka, Minnesota based corporation that was originally established to provide services for the high resolution upgrading of LaserJet printers. Now, the company also manufactures a line of plain paper image setters along with laser printers.
In 1989, LaserMaster released the LaserMaster LM 1000. It was a black and white laser printer with the capacity of maximum 1000 by 1000 dots per inch resolution. This product also implemented a proprietary video interface which provided support for the Device Driver Programming Interface (DDPI) protocol. The company marketed the LaserMaster 1000 for $7,495 as a combination of hardware and software package designed for high resolution plain paper typesetting capability. The package also included a modified Canon engine printer that incorporates LX6K Controller Kit. This kit was a microcomputer adapter card controller that allowed the efficient function of the hardware. Along with that, they also included the TurboRes software. This, when combined with the printer hardware allows the user to have an increase in the number of dots per inch output from 1000 by 400 to 1000 by 1000 maximum. The application helps in regulating horizontal and vertical printer dot positions along with controlling the height and size of the dots. The functions could quickly produce quarter and half height dots with automatic rotation and type scaling; along with an extensive font choice that would fit their market’s various needs.
The LaserMaster product gained popularity for providing convenient desktop publishing (DTP) capability with typeset quality to home users
LaserMaster changed its name to ColorSpan Corporation in 1997. This move was done to bring focus to its line of wide format inkjet printers which was introduced under LaserMaster a few years earlier. ColorSpan functions as designer, manufacturer, and marketer of digital wide format color inkjet printers including what they called the DesignWinder Professional HiRes (drum based) 8-color printer and DisplayMaker HiRes 8-color series. This printer helped to establish ColorSpan’s reputation in the IT industry as a credible manufacturer of printers.
By June 2000, the growing credibility of ColorSpan in the wide format printer market prompted MacDermid Inc. to initiate acquisition of the company. Upon completion of the purchase, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary and began operating under the business name MacDermid ColorSpan, Incorporated. In November 1, 2007; Hewlett-Packard Corporation entered the picture with another acquisition offer. ColorSpan accepted and the terms were quickly put into action.
