Company Name: Legend
Description: Legend has had quite a few changes of its names within the first few years of its establishment. It started in 1984 when eleven engineers, headed by Liu Chuanzhi, put their heads together to create a company which they called The New Technology Developer Inc. The group of engineers acquired funding from the Chinese Academy of Sciences that amounted to approximately US $25,000 to help start the company.
In 1988, only 4 years after it was first created, Company Legend Hong Kong was established. Then following year, The Beijing Legend Computer Group Company was created.
At present, one of the eleven engineers and head founder, Liu Chuanzhi still serves as a member of the board of directors. The organization is currently leadby their Chairman, Yang Yuanqing; the President, CEO and Director, William J. Amelio, and the SVP and CTO, He Zhiqiang.
Legend was one of the first companies of its kind in China. It was built with the aim of providing computer technology to the country. In 1987, they launched the Legend Card; a computer add-on that enabled English software installed machines to interpret Chinese characters. This product received the highest award for National Science Technology Progress from the Chinese government in 1988.
In 1990, Legend started releasing its own personal computers for home use. The China Torch program accepted the Legend computers for consumer use. By 1992, they had started marketing these computers. The first 586 computers were introduced in 1993 after a deal with Intel.
The company cornered the Chinese market for computers when they released their brand of servers in 1995; which was quickly followed by the release of their first laptop in 1996. This was also swiftly followed by a line of multi-function laser printers released in 1997. Within the same year, they entered into an agreement with Microsoft that allowed the company to distribute Microsoft made software with their machines. With all the products they had already released, the company found the need to set up the first Legend retail shop by 1998.
The company announced a change in brand name from Legend to Lenovo in 2003. The move, they claimed was aligned with its expansion into the global market. The new company name appends the “Le” from “Legend” to the Latin word for new “novo.”
Lenovo later acquired IBM’s Personal Computing Division (PCD), making Lenovo the third-largest computer manufacturer world wide. They continued development on IBM PCD products and developed an Innovation Center in the research Triangle Park in North Carolina. Not long after, they developed the lightweight ThinkPad X41 Tablet, the first widescreen ThinkPad with wireless WAN and titanium cover, ThinkPad Z60 and the first dual-core ThinkPad laptops.
