Company Name: Linksys
Description: Linksys Group Incorporated is one of the biggest manufacturers of home and small office network products. From manufacturing cables and hubs, Linksys is recognized as one of the world’s leaders in VoIP (voice over internet protocol), wireless and Ethernet networking products used in home, small/home office and small business environments.
The prestigious Inc 500 named Linksys as one of the fastest growing private companies for six consecutive years. Linksys topped the list in 2000.
Currently, top executives for Linksys are listed as Greg Memo, Vice President and General Manager (Consumer Business Organization for Linksys); David Tucker, Vice President (Linksys Connected Office Business Organization); Marna Bullar, Vice President for World Wide Marketing; and Mark Payne, Vice President for Operation. Victor Tsao is the Vice president and General Manager of the whole Linksys operation.
Linksys was founded by couple Victor and Janie Tsao in the year 1988, tracing its beginnings at the garage of the Tsao family. Both husband and wife were working in the field of Information Technology when they built their first computer peripheral company: Victor was an IT executive at the Irvine-based Taco Bell restaurant chain, while Janie was under employ by American retailing company Carter Hawley Hale. The two thought of a product that can connect several computers to just one printer, with the idea coming from a Taiwanese cable manufacturer that used telephone wires for cable extension to link the devices and create the set-up.
In 1994, Linksys expanded from manufacturing printer-to-PC connectors to PC-to-PC Ethernet cards, cords, and hubs, with the objective of offering easy-to-use and affordable products to the market. The affordability enabled small businesses and households to connect computers and share data at the same time. Soon enough, their broadband connectivity products became popular in the market, inspiring Linksys to expand their business to networking products like modems and routers for homes and small businesses.
Their biggest lead from their rivals happened when they launched the 802.11g Wi-Fi access card. Cisco saw potential in the company and purchased Linksys in 2003, yet allowed Linksys to run its own division and retain the brand name.
Linksys has a wide variety of products, ranging from routers, modems to gateways for home use and office/business use. Samples of their products include: WRT150N (wireless home router), WRT330N (wireless gaming router), WRT350N (wireless router with storage link), WCG200 (wireless cable gateway), BEFSR81 (DSL router), CM100 (Cable Modem with USB and Ethernet Connections), WUSB600N (wireless network adapter), WPC300N (wireless notebook adapter), and WMP110 (wireless PCI adapter).
